Landmark Announces Men's Tennis All-Conference Teams
TOWSON, Md. - The Landmark Conference men's tennis coaches voted and named Drew senior Raul Smego the Landmark Conference Player of the Year for the third consecutive year. Goucher's Seth Hoesman was chosen as the Rookie of the Year.
Smego competed at both No. 1 and 2 singles this season finishing 9-5 in dual matches during the regular season. He lost just one conference match this year and wrapped up play in the Landmark with a 23-2 career record. He primarily teamed up with Djedjy Hill in doubles and the duo went 6-0 together in conference play. Smego led Drew to its sixth straight Landmark Championship and the team will continue its season in the NCAA Tournament.
The All-Landmark First Team features six singles players and three doubles teams. Smego is a four-time All-landmark selection and joining him on this year's singles First Team is three-time award winner, Tim McGurrin of Scranton. He boasts a 7-4 regular season duals record this year including 6-1 in conference play. McGurrin's teammate, David Teres returned after studying abroad in 2012 and earned First Team honors. Teres was named Landmark Rookie of the Year in 2011 and received First Team recognition. This year, Teres came back and went undefeated in conference play at No. 2 singles. Catholic's Brian Bradley and Juniata's Justin Wisniewski also earned First Team honors. Bradley went 14-3 overall and 6-1 in conference play at No. 1. Wisniewski finished 13-5 and 4-3 at No. 1 for the Eagles.
The final pick on the First Team goes to Hoesman. The Landmark Rookie of the Year made an immediate impact for the Gophers finishing 11-8 overall and 3-4 in the Landmark at No. 1 singles. He won three straight in mid-April including matches against U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and Susquehanna.
The top three doubles teams included Smego and Hill who combined to go undefeated in the conference. McGurrin and Teres teamed up at No. 1 doubles and went 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the Landmark. The final doubles team features Hoesman and Goucher teammate David Spivey. The duo went 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the conference at No. 1 doubles.
For the second consecutive year, Scranton head coach Keith Hetsko and his staff were voted Coaching Staff of the Year. In his seventh season at the helm of the Royals, the team went 8-5 overall and 6-1 in the Landmark to earn the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament for the first time. The season was highlighted by a 5-4 win against Drew that halted the Rangers' 110-match conference winning streak.
