Volleyball Awards Announced
TOWSON, Md. – If the 2014 First Team All-Landmark looks familiar, it is because six of the eight players were on the 2013 team. Juniata swept the major awards and Amelia Kepler was voted the Landmark Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Brittani Young was named the Specialist of the Year and Megan Moroney was chosen as the Rookie of the Year. The Juniata coaching staff also repeats as the Landmark Coaching Staff of the Year.
Kepler switched back and forth between outside hitter and opposite this season and still finished with 2.37 kills per set against some of the top teams in the country. She played in six conference matches and hit .295 with 2.76 kills per set. Kepler earned First Team All-Landmark honors for the third consecutive year.
Young joined Kepler on First Team, voted the top specialist in the Landmark. She averaged nearly five digs per set against a strong schedule with the nationally ranked Eagles. Young finished with 4.52 digs per set in conference play.
Scranton's Julia Crilly wrapped up her career as a four-time All-Landmark selection and two-time First Team honoree. She led the conference in kills, kills per set, points, and points per set while ranking in the top five for digs. Crilly averaged 3.62 kills per set and 3.04 digs per set during the regular season while hitting .248. Erin Byrne also earned First Team honors. The Susquehanna sophomore repeats on the First Team after being voted Rookie of the Year last season. She picked up where she left off with 2.67 kills per set and a .235 hitting percentage to go along with 2.34 digs per set.
Juniata's Nakita Gearhart and Elizabethtown's Kelci Scannapieco were voted the top middle hitters in the Landmark. Gearhart is a two-time First Team selection. She missed two weeks of competition with an injury, but came back stronger and finished with 2.42 kills per set with a .274 hitting percentage before earning Most Valuable Player honors at the Landmark Championship. Scannapieco dominated Landmark matches with 4.52 kills per set. The two-time All-Commonwealth selection finished with 100 total blocks this season for 0.84 per set.
Kelly Reynolds was chosen as the conference's top setter again this season. Reynolds stepped in at Juniata right away last year and continued her consistent play this season with 9.78 assists per set. She also added 2.52 digs per set.
Susquehanna's Sarah Paluck rounds out the First Team. The junior libero is a two-time First Team pick and the 2013 Specialist of the Year. She led the conference in digs with 5.12 digs per set during the regular season. Paluck is also considered a steady presence at the service line with 50 aces through 37 regular season matches.
Moroney won a starting spot a couple of weeks into the season and has put together an impressive rookie campaign at Juniata. She finished the regular season with 2.26 kills per set and a .307 hitting percentage. Moroney also averaged 0.79 blocks per set to earn Second Team honors along with the Rookie of the Year award.
The Coaching Staff of the Year honor marks the fourth for the Eagles and second since Heather Pavlik took over as head coach. Juniata went undefeated in the conference for the eighth straight season before earning its eighth Landmark title. The Eagles have been ranked in the top 25 all season and consistently in the top 10. Pavlik and her staff will lead Juniata into a record 34th NCAA tournament this weekend.
