Meredith Mesaris Named Women's Basketball Senior Scholar Athlete
TOWSON, Md. — Scranton's Meredith Mesaris has been chosen as the Landmark Women's Basketball Senior Scholar Athlete for the 2014-15 season. Mesaris is the first Royal women's basketball player to receive senior scholar recognition since Kathleen Daly was honored back in 2007-08.
The senior forward from Fairfax, Va., ranked up countless awards during the 2014-15 season. After earning honorable mention All-America status from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association as a junior, Mesaris was one of 10 players nationally to be named a WBCA All-American this winter. She was also named a Third-Team All-American by D3hoops.com after being recognized as the Landmark Player of the Year.
Mesaris repeated as a First-Team All-Landmark performer after leading the conference with 19.9 points per game. She ends her Royal career with 1,758 points, fourth most in program history, and she sits atop her school's record books in both free throws made (400) and free throw attempts (482). Scranton clinched NCAA Tournament berths in each of her three seasons with the team.
All of her success on the basketball court did nothing to prevent Mesaris from being successful academically as well. She maintains a 3.69 grade-point average while majoring in management. A three-time member of the Landmark Academic Honor Roll, Mesaris was chosen as a second team Capital One Academic All-America recipient by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) back in February.
The Landmark Conference selects 20 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.
The honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, and sports information directors. Chosen at the end of each sport season, the six winter honorees will be announced between March 31 – April 2, with two named each day.
