Scranton's Matthew Busch Named Landmark's Men's Soccer Senior Scholar Athlete
TOWSON, Md. - The Landmark Conference selects 20 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.
The honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark, athletics directors, sports information directors, senior woman administrators, and faculty athletic representatives. Chosen at the end of each sport season, the first six honorees will be announced over the next two weeks.
Matthew Busch of the University of Scranton men's soccer team was a key leader on a defense that allowed just 16 goals all season long, as the unit carried the Royals to their second consecutive Landmark Conference Championship and a victory in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.
Off the pitch, Busch has been as strong of a student, posting a 3.9 grade point average as a Neuroscience major (and a math minor) at the University.
For Busch, who was named to the Landmark Conference's Fall Academic Honor Roll for the third time in his career earlier this week, earns another award for his work in the classroom, as he ends his career at Scranton as a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-America All-District selection, as well.
On the field, Busch was one of Scranton's captains this past season, as the Royals finished with a 15-4-1 overall mark. Starting all 20 matches the Royals played in on the year, Busch eventually earned All-Landmark Conference Second Team honors on the defensive end after Scranton recorded nine shutouts throughout the year.
Busch also chipped in on the offensive end throughout the year, adding three assists. For his career, Busch played in 70 career matches, making 65 starts overall on the Scranton defense.
