All-Landmark Swimming & Diving Teams Announced
All-Landmark Swimming & Diving Teams Announced
TOWSON, Md. – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men and Susquehanna women dominated the 2016 Landmark Swimming & Diving Championships, and earned seven of the eight major awards.
The Mariners swept the Diver of the Year awards on both the men's and women's side, while the men's program also took home Rookie of the Year, and Coaching Staff of the Year accolades.
Senior Gerrit Porter was named the conference Diver of the Year for the fourth straight season, sweeping the award for his career. Porter earned 447.45 total points for the 1-meter dive, and totaled 513.40 points in the 3-meter dive.
Blythe Fentress was named the Landmark Diver of the Year for the second-straight year on the women's side. The junior claimed the women's 3-meter dive with a new Landmark record score of 407.20. The mark surpassed former teammate and conference champion Elizabeth Jackson's 405.10 from 2014. Fentress now owns both the 1-meter and 3-meter records for 11 dives.
The Mariner coaching staff of Sean Tedesco and diving coach Johan Lopez was named the Coaching Staff of the Year for the third straight year, and seventh time in nine seasons. Tedesco led Merchant Marine its ninth straight championship with 891 points.
Christopher Kahl took home the Rookie of the Year accolades, as he won the 200 backstroke event with an NCAA B-Cut time of 1:49.92. Kahl also won the 100-yard backstroke in 51.05. The freshman earned Second Team All-Conference honors in the 200-yard Individual Medley, and was on the championship 200 Medley Relay and 400 Medley Relay teams.
On the women's side, Susquehanna head coach Jerry Foley received his third Coach of the Year award. The Maroon & Orange extend an impressive streak, by winning their sixth straight championship with 872 points, setting a new Landmark record for points. Susquehanna won an impressive 13 events overall, including three from 2016 Landmark Rookie of the Year Katie Willis (50/100/200 free), and 2016 Landmark Female Swimmer of the Year Kelsey Lessard (200/400 IM, 200 Fly).
Willis put on a brilliant performance over the course of the three-day championships. She was the first-leg of the winning 200-yard Freestyle Relay team that set a new program record with a time of 1:38.16. Her winning time of 24.53 in the 50 Free was a personal best for the rookie, and a new school record for Susquehanna. Willis also helped the 200-yard Medley, and 400-yard Freestyle Relay teams to a second-place finish with a time of 1:48.46, and 3:36.24 respectively, setting a new school record in both events.
Lessard won the 200 yard IM with her conference, meet, and school-best time of 2:07.20 which surpasses her previous PR, meet-record and school-best by 1.5 seconds, good enough for a NCAA B-cut. On the second day of competition, the senior set a meet-record with her PR time of 4:33.81 in the 400 yard IM. Her time is a NCAA B-Cut and puts her second place all-time in the SU record book. To close out the individual championship honors, Susquehanna fittingly sent Kelsey Lessard to the top of podium to accept the gold medal for the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.56), setting a new school record. Lessard's sister Devon, who holds the conference record, was on hand to present Kelsey with the medal.
Rounding out the conference awards is Morgan Richter from Goucher. Richter earned Landmark Male Swimmer of the Year after an impressive championship performance. On Friday, Richter earned career title No. 7 for his performance in the 500-yard freestyle, where he was clocked at 4:38.84. The senior continued is dominance during the second day of competition, setting a new school, meet, and conference record in the 100-yard Butterfly. Richter's time of 49.72 allowed him to claim his third straight title and eighth for his career. In the most anticipated event for Richter was the 200-yard Butterfly, where he has held the title for the past three years. Richter didn't disappoint, clocking in with a winning time of 1:49.74, a new meet and school record. He joins Mike Raley as the only two male swimmers in the history of Goucher's swimming program to be named the outstanding swimmer by a conference. Raley was the Outstanding Male Swimmer in the Capital Athletic Conference in 1995-96.
First Team All-Landmark honors are awarded to those swimmers who finishes first at the Landmark Championships while second place finishers earn Second Team All-Landmark recognition. Nine First Team swimmers and divers won multiple individual events. Those not already referenced are Catholic's Guido Saccaggi (1650 Free/400 IM), USMMA's Stone Hewitt (100/200 Breast). On the women's side, Susuqehanna's Lindsey VanKirk won the 500/1650 Free, while Merchant Marine's Tyler Wickesberg was the champion in the 100/200 Back.
Four teams from each gender had swimmers earn first team accolades. Marywood added second team recognition on the men's side, while Drew and Goucher had women's representatives on the second team.
