Landmark Releases 2015-16 Men's Tennis Awards

TOWSON, Md. — Goucher completed an undefeated regular season in conference play and topped Juniata in the championship match to win the program’s first conference title in its 28-year history. For the Gophers, Joey Caracappa earned Player of the Year status, and head coach Brendan Kincaid was named Coach of the Year.

Caracappa and Kincaid become the first player and men’s tennis coach from Goucher to earn Player of the Year honors since joining the Landmark in 2007. Drew’s Vineet Vemulapally meanwhile, was honored as the Rookie of the Year.

Playing every match from the No. 1 singles position, Caracappa went 5-1 in conference play and 7-3 in dual matches. In addition to his Player of the Year award, he was also one of six netters to achieve First Team All-Landmark status. The sophomore also earned First Team doubles recognition with partner Seth Hoesman, one of three First Team selections.

The duo finished 13-3 on the season, and went a perfect 8-0 in Landmark matchups.

Vemulapally kicked off his Ranger career with a 10-7 record. He finished the season with a 3-3 mark in Landmark matches, highlighted by a 6-3, 7-5 win over Moravian’s Matt Tuorto.

Hoesman has been named as a Landmark First Team selection in every season he has been a Gopher. The senior lifted Goucher to its championship title with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Juniata’s Matyas Kohout at No. 3, and in the process, extended his winning streak to 19 matches. He improved to 22-1 in singles play this season, and was chosen MVP of the Landmark playoffs.

Joining Caracappa and Hoesman on the First Team from Goucher is Jack Hodges. Hodges earned his First Team nod after completing an 8-0 year in Landmark matches from the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. He also garnered a spot on the First Team doubles slate with partner Midori Fujitani.

Catholic’s Juan Lorido earns a spot on the First Team for the third consecutive season. The junior finished his season with a 9-3 record and a mark of 7-1 in conference play.

Merchant Marine landed one player on the First Team, with Jake McDonough as a repeat honoree. Playing primarily in the No. 1 spot, McDonough compiled an 8-4 record (5-3 Landmark).

The remaining singles spot went to Moravian’s John Wylie. Wylie and teammate Matt Tuorto were also awarded First Team doubles accolades. On the singles front, Wylie played the entire season at the No. 2 spot where he was 13-6 (6-2 Landmark). He and Tuorto went 17-3 in No. 1 doubles and was 6-2 in Landmark matchups.

Now in his fourth season as head coach, Kincaid continued his rapid turnaround of the program in 2015-16, guiding the Gophers to a 19-4 record, the best record in the history of the men’s tennis program. Under his direction, 10 of his players have earned All-Landmark honors, and has now coach a Player of the Year (Caracappa) and a Rookie of the Year in Seth Hoesman (2013).
