Women's Tennis Awards for 2015-16 Season Announced
TOWSON, Md. — The eight Landmark women's tennis coaches have selected Juniata's Lauren Lucas as the 2015-16 Player and Rookie of the Year. Elizabethtown's Matt Helsel earns Coach of the Year recognition.
Lucas is the first Juniata women's tennis player to earn Player and Rookie of the Year honors in the Landmark era. She finished 13-7 overall, playing at the top of the Eagles lineup on each occasion and was a perfect 7-0 in conference matches. Lucas also landed on the Landmark's First Team singles list.
Helsel has guided Elizabethtown to back-to-back Landmark championships, and completed another season undefeated in conference matches. The Blue Jays ended the 2016 season with a final record of 15-3. Elizabethtown will face Penn St. Behrend in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
Julia Frattaroli and Emily Walsh from Scranton garnered both First Team singles and doubles recognition. In singles, Walsh, who was a 2014 and 2015 First Team selection, finished the season with a record of 14-8 at No. 1 singles. She dropped just one conference match, going 6-1 this spring. Frattaroli spent the majority of the season at the No. 2 singles position where she posted a 12-4 record. She also just dropped just one match in conference matches to finish 6-1. The tandem ended the year with a 13-5 record, with Walsh winning her 44th career doubles match, putting her second all-time in that category in program history.
Moravian's Brittney Eady is making her second appearance on the First Team. The junior registered a 10-6 record and a 4-3 mark in the Landmark. Eady and doubles partner Skylar Oliwa posted an 8-2 record at No. 1 and dropped just one match in conference play to finish the season at 6-1. The duo were named to the Landmark's doubles First Team.
Laura Torsiello helped the Cardinals make their third consecutive Landmark tournament appearance. The junior went 9-8 (4-3 Landmark) as the top player for the Cardinals and was named to the singles First Team this season.
Elizabethtown completed the Landmark regular season undefeated at 7-0 before eventually going on to claim the conference title last weekend. No. 2 singles player Taylor Helsel went 6-1 in conference singles matches and was voted onto the first team for her role in that success.
Drew's Ty Ty Nguyen is the youngest on the First Team squad. The freshman made an immediate impact for the Rangers, playing at the No. 2 singles position majority of the season. Nguyen ended her rookie campaign with a 10-9 record, including a 4-3 mark in conference matches.
