Bridget Gallaher Named Women’s Lacrosse Senior Scholar Athlete
TOWSON, Md. – University of Scranton defender Bridget Gallaher has been chosen as the 2016 Landmark Women's Lacrosse Senior Scholar Athlete. Gallaher is the third Royal to be recognized this academic year, joining Jasmine Sconciafurno (women's soccer), and Rachel Cisto (volleyball), and she is the first Scranton women's lacrosse player to be honored.
Gallaher was a starter for the Royals in each of the past two seasons, serving as a team captain and earning second-team all-Landmark Conference honors this past season. She finished the season with career highs in assists (3), ground balls (51) and caused turnovers (21), all while helping Scranton finish 11-7 and reach the Landmark Conference championship for the first time in the conference's nine-year history.
She finished her career with five goals and four assists for nine points to go along with 86 ground balls, 20 draw controls and 34 caused turnovers. She appeared in 55 games, starting 35 times, including all 34 over the past two seasons.
In the classroom, Gallaher has a 3.83 grade-point average while pursuing a degree in biology with a minor in Spanish. She has earned Dean's List honors in every semester and is the vice president of the Alpha Sigma Nu National Jesuit Honor Society and is also a member of the Tri-Beta Biology Honor Society.
Earlier this month, Gallaher was honored by the University with the Father Fitzpatrick Award, which is given annually to a senior student-athlete who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and community service. As a junior, Gallaher became a Royal CHOICES champion, serving as a leader in the University's Royal CHOICES program, serving as a leader in a group of student-athletes who promote healthy lifestyles and drug and alcohol awareness. As part of her duties, Gallaher attended the Athletic Prevention Programming and Leadership Education in Orlando in January of 2015.
She has also been a volunteer at the End of Year Drive each of the past three years, staying on campus at the end of the semester to collect donations and organize and distribute them to the Scranton community. And she has also volunteered at Freshman Fall Move-In and with Scranton Street Sweep. In 2014, Gallaher was a group leader for the University's student-led SEARCH retreat and participated in the Scranton Emerging Leaders Program. Gallaher is also a member of the Biology Club, the Pre-Physician's Assistant Club and Move For Those Who Can't, an ALS awareness group.
The Landmark Conference selects 20 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.
The honorees must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, and sports information directors. Chosen at the end of each sport season, the eight spring honorees will be announced between May 19-25.
