TOWSON, Md. – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) recently announced the 2017-18 Academic All-District Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams. Six Landmark student-athletes were honored by the organization, including Matthew Holtschneider (Catholic), Brian Galfond (Catholic), Connor Casey (Scranton), Elizabeth Johnson (Catholic), Lauren Bertucci (Moravian), and Rebecca Russo (Scranton).
To be eligible for the Academic All-District honor, student-athletes must be of sophomore status and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher.
Matthew Holtschneider is a civil engineering major with a grade point average of 3.95. Holtschneider served as the team captain and a driving force for the Cardinals during his final campaign. The midfielder from Kingsville, Md., appeared in 18 games this season. He made 12 starts and notched his first career goal against Landmark opponent Juniata College and was named to the Landmark Men’s Soccer First Team.
Catholic junior Brian Galfond led the Catholic offense with 13 points on five goals and three assists. He notched the gamewinner against conference rival the University of Scranton. Hailing from Gaithersburg, Md., Galfond started 17 games and made 19 appearances. Galfond boasts a 3.90 grade point average as a mechanical engineer major.
A biology major with a 3.80 cumulative grade-point average, Connor Casey was the Royals' top goal scorer this season with six. He added one assist for 13 total points, and four of his goals were game-winners, including in a 2-1 victory at 13th-ranked Cortland State on Sept. 9. In the classroom, Casey has been named to the Dean's List five times and has been named to the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll twice, and is expected to be named again when the fall sports list is announced on Friday.
Elizabeth Johnson led the league in with 66 shots. She finished the season ranked second in the conference with 28 points and 12 goals. The York, Pa., native appeared in 18 games with 17 starts and scored gamewinners against Virginia Wesleyan, Randolph-Macon and Drew University. Johnson boasts a 3.87 grade point average as a business management major.
Earlier Thursday, Lauren Bertucci was named the 2017 Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Year and she also earned a spot on the Landmark All-Conference Team for the fourth consecutive fall. Bertucci has made the First Team the last two seasons after being on the Second Team as a freshman and sophomore. Bertucci scored one goal in 2017 which was a game-winner, and she finished her career with three goals and an assist for seven points in 63 career matches including a pair of game-winning goals. She is majoring in business management at Moravian.
Rebecca Russo was named to the All-Landmark Conference First Team, marking the first time in her career she has earned all-conference honors. And last Saturday, she was named the Landmark Conference championship MVP after scoring the game-winning goal while leading the Royals to their second straight title. In the classroom, Russo is a nursing major with a 3.96 grade-point average. She is expected to be named to the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll when it is announced tomorrow.
The honorees now advance to the national All-American ballot.
