Landmark Announces Women's Soccer Awards
TOWSON, Md. – Elizabethtown sophomore Lydia Lawson has been named the Landmark Offensive Player of the Year, while Moravian senior Lauren Bertucci was honored with Defensive Player of the Year. Moravian's Sara Cassel and Scranton's Shae Guifoyle earned Co-Rookie of the Year honors and Susquehanna's Head Coach Nick Hoover and his staff picked up Coaching Staff of the Year.
Lawson led the league in scoring this season with 15 goals and one assist for 31 points. She also paced the Landmark by racking up eight goals in conference matches. She scored eight of her goals in conference matches, tying Catholic's Lindsay Aleman for the single-season record in Landmark games only.
Bertucci is coming off of First Team All-Landmark recognition in 2016, and repeats the honor this season. She anchored the Greyhounds defense that led the conference in goals against (0.36) and posted 10 shutouts. The 0.36 goals against average is a new conference record, previously set by the 2010 and 2016 Scranton teams. She also held the conference top three top goal scorers to just four total shots combined during the regular season.
Cassel played in 16 games and started in 13. She was also a member of the Moravian backline that allowed just six goals, four of which came in conference matches, and a goals against average of 0.56. The 11 goals in a new conference record, breaking the 11 goals allowed by the 2016 Scranton squad.
Guifoyle stepped in and contributed immediately for Scranton. She played in 18 games with 17 starts as a freshman and helped the Scranton defense to post 13 shutouts and a goals against average of 0.65. More impressively, she was a member of the backline that allowed just two conference goals in seven games.
Three of the four forwards are a first-time First Team selection, with only Scranton's Jamie Hreniuk being a repeat selection. Joining Hreniuk are Catholic's Elizabeth Johnson, Elizabethtown's Lydia Lawson, and Susquehanna's Alyssa Bolger. The foursome were the top four scorers in the conference. Lawson led the group with 15 goals, followed by Johnson and Hreniuk (12) and Bolger with 10.
Scranton's Erica Licari and Susquehanna's Mairead Ruane earned First Team midfielders honors after being on the Second Team last year. Joining the duo are first-time honorees Alex Gilgorri from Drew and Catholic's Andrea Jablonskyj. Gilgorri took 57 shots this season for the Rangers, ranking her third, while Jablonskyj ranked tied for third in assists with five.
Joining Bertucci on the First Team defenders are Scranton's Rebecca Russo and Susquehanna's Katie Beluch. Russo helped Scranton to post a goals against average of 0.65 while Beluch and the Susquehanna defense allowed just four goals in conference matches.
For the second year in a row, a Scranton goalkeeper was voted on the First Team. Colleen Berry led the league with 89 saves and had a goals against average of 0.66. Her 13 shutouts ties from Scranton women's soccer player Kelsy McAnelly from 2012.
On his sixth season at the helm of Susquehanna, head coach Nick Hoover and his staff guided the River Hawks to a 14-4-2 record this season. He helped Susquehanna reach the Landmark Championship match for the first time since 2009 and a berth to the NCAA Tournament, a first for the program as well.
