Landmark Announces Major Track & Field Award Winners
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The six Landmark outdoor track & field coaches made their major award selections immediately following the conclusion of this past weekend's championship meet.
On the men's side, Moravian's John Spirk and Susquehanna's Matt Gass were chosen as the Track Athletes of the Year, while Juniata's Andrew Paterno and Evan Ulrich were named the Field Athlete of Rookie of the Year respectively. The Eagles head coach Jon Cutright and his staff earned Coaching Staff of the Year.
For the women, Elizabethtown's Kelsey Brady was named the Track Athlete of the Year while Susquehanna's Gabby Alguire was voted the Field Athlete of the Year. Goucher's Lexi Stewart earned Rookie of the Year and Goucher head coach John Caslin was named the Coach of the Year.
Spirk was a two-event winner. He won the 110-meter high hurdles for a second straight year in an ECAC qualifying time of 15.13 seconds, and he also captured the 400-meter hurdles for a second consecutive spring in an ECAC qualifying time of 56.13 seconds.
Gass won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.68 and placed third in the 400-meter race with a time of 49.03.
Paterno had several top-five finishes in his final outdoor championships, including a first-place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 47.02m. He placed fourth in the shot put (12.59m), fourth in the discus (39.61m) and fifth in the javelin with a mark of 43.73m.
Ulrich concluded his freshman campaign with a pair of top-five finishes. The rookie placed first in the 10,000m run with a time of 33:10.30, four seconds ahead of second place finishes and teammate Conor Dimond. Ulrich also placed third in the 5,000m race with a time of 15:34.40.
Cutright and his staff earns Juniata's first men's Coaching Staff of the Year honors. Cutright guided the Eagles to a third place finish at this year's championships with 124 points, 65 more than last year.
Brady's dominance of the mid-distance events that began in the winter continued Saturday and went into Sunday as well. The junior, after a gold in the 1500m on Saturday, did not only win the 800m on Sunday, but did so with a new personal best time. Brady ran 2:16.28, pulling away from the competition over the final 100 meters, to win her second gold of the championships. The time improved her sixth-place standing all-time.
Alguire won the Landmark Conference Championship in the javelin for the fourth straight year. Alguire made the winning throw on her third attempt of the day with a winning throw of 45.24 meters (148' 5") as only two other competitors cleared the 40-meter mark.
Stewart won the 200m dash (26.15) and placed second in the 100m dash (12.79) on Sunday and earned Goucher's first Landmark Conference major award since 2012 when Destiny Phillips was named the Rookie of the Year. Stewart completed the weekend with one All-Landmark First Team Honor and two All-Landmark Second Team honors.
She was joined by the Goucher College coaching staff, headed by John Caslin, as the Landmark Conference Coaching Staff of the Year. He guided the Gophers to fourth place following the two-day event, scoring 79 points (highest score since 2012 -98 points).
First Team All-Landmark honors are awarded to student-athletes who finish first at the Landmark Championships while second place finishers earn Second Team All-Landmark recognition. The full list of honorees is available below.
