Landmark Releases 2016-17 Men's Tennis Awards
TOWSON, Md. – Drew's Salikh Gilmutdinov completed the regular season with a 20-1 record, including a perfect 7-0 mark in conference matches to earn the Landmark Player of the Year honors. Teammate Geoffrey Diehl and Goucher's Mike Herman was named Co-Rookies of the Year, and Scranton's Jack Rubano and his staff earned Coach of the Year honors.
Playing every match from the No. 1 singles position, Gilmutdinov went 7-0 in conference play and 20-1 overall. In addition to his Player of the Year award, he was also one of six players to achieve First-Team All-Landmark status. He and his doubles partner Will Morrison were one of three First Team All-Landmark doubles teams. The duo went 6-1 in conference play, 16-1 overall.
After earning Rookie of the Year and Second-Team honors last season, Vineet Vemulapally earned a spot on the First Team. The sophomore went 18-2 in dual matches playing primarily from the No. 2 position and did not drop a match in conference play. He and partner Geoffrey Diehl were named Second-Team doubles that went 13-2 overall and 6-1 in the Landmark.
Jack Hodges earns his second First Team honors. The Goucher junior completed the regular season with a 6-1 record in Landmark matches from primarily at the top of the teams lineup. Hodges also earned Second Team doubles honors with partner Midori Fujitani.
Juniata senior Dean Polisena earns his third First-Team honors. The two-time Player of the Year went 8-6 this season with a 5-2 mark in conference matches.
The remaining singles spot went to Scranton's Keller McGurrin and Alex Ochalski. The duo were also named to the First Team doubles team. On the singles front McGurrin was ranked at the top of his lineup, and defeated four of his seven conference opponents. Ochalski meanwhile, posted a 6-1 record in Landmark matches.
Now in this third season as head coach, Rubano has turned Scranton into a consistent presence at the top of the Landmark standings. Rubano guided Scranton to a 6-1 conference record and earned the No. 2 seed in this year's Landmark Championships.
