Landmark Releases 2017-18 Women's Basketball Awards
TOWSON, Md. – The University of Scranton's Bridgette Mann is the Landmark Conference women's basketball coaches' pick as Player of the Year while Juniata College's Morgan Instone is the Defensive Player of the Year. The coaches' selected Elizabethtown College's Veronica Christ as the Rookie of the Year.
A three-time Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, Mann ranks in the top-10 in scoring, field goal percentage, assists, three-point percentage, minutes played, and free throws. The junior guard scored in double-digits in 24 of 27 games played this season while leading the Royals to their third consecutive Landmark Women's Basketball title.
Instone averaged 11.9 points per game while racking up 7.6 rebounds per game. She ranks first overall with 64 blocks, 39 of which came against conference opponents. She becomes the Eagles fourth Defensive Player of the Year honoree, joining Claudia McDowell (2009) and Kate McDonald (2012, 2014).
Christ becomes just the fourth Rookie of the Year for the Blue Jays, and first since Abbie Fabian, who earned the honors in 1998 when Etown was a member of the MAC Commonwealth. A versatile player who is explosive to the basket and effective as a perimeter shooter, she led the team in blocks (20), was the second leading rebounder (4.8 rpg) and was a balanced contributor on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.
Joining Mann on the Landmark All-Conference First Team are Elizabethtown's Lydia Lawson, Juniata's Dani Atkinson, Moravian's Camille McPherson and Maddie Capuano, and fellow Lady Royal Makenzie Mason.
Lawson, who was named the 2017 Landmark Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year, earns her first nod on the first team. She led the Blue Jays with 46 steals and ranked second with 78 steals.
Atkinson earns First Team honors for the first time in her career. The senior ended the season averaging 14.9 points per game and 2.2 assists per game. She scored a season-high 26 points in the 59-58 overtime loss to Scranton in the conference championship game.
McPherson picked up her second straight First Team honors. At the end of the conference tournament, McPherson leads all Landmark players in scoring, averaging 16.6 points per game. After earning 2017 Rookie of the Year honors, Capuano averaged 13.5 points per game, accumulated 37 steals and a league-leading 97 assists.
Mason ranked second on the Lady Royals team with 9.7 points per game while shooting 51.9 percent from the field. In conference play, she averaged 10.1 points per game and 3.0 assists.
Scranton head coach Trevor Woodruff and his staff were voted Coaching Staff of the Year for the second time in his career. The Lady Royals won their sixth Landmark title last Saturday.
