2018 Senior Scholar Athletes
TOWSON, Md. – The University of Scranton's Michael Boland earns the first-ever Landmark Conference Senior Scholar Athlete for Men's Golf.
Boland captured the Landmark Conference title on May 5-6 with rounds of 78-78 – 156 to win the title by two shots on the Royals' home course, the par-71 Glenmaura National Golf Club in Moosic, Pa. He became just the fourth individual conference champion in Scranton history. He joins his head coach, Ed Karpovich, who won Middle Atlantic Conference titles in 1974 and 1976, Will Carey (1988) and J.T. Yarem (2005) as Royals to win a conference title.
Boland, who was named All-Landmark Conference First Team, finished his senior season by breaking 80 in seven of his final eight rounds, including a career-low 73 in the final round of the Glenmaura National Collegiate Invitational on April 23. He finished the season with a career-low average of 81.21 strokes in a career-high 14 rounds.
In four seasons, Boland averaged 82.28 strokes in 36 rounds. He broke 80 on 11 occasions and served as a team captain this past season.
In the classroom, Boland has maintained a 3.79 grade-point average while majoring in health administration. He was named to the Dean's List six times and is a Dean's Scholarship recipient. He was named to the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll this spring and was named to the Empire 8 Conference President's List five times. Boland is also a member of the Upsilon Phi Delta honor society.
The Landmark Conference selects 22 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.
The honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, faculty athletic representatives, senior woman administrators, and sports information directors.
