Landmark Announces Athletes of the Week

TOWSON, Md. - The Landmark Conference has released the Athletes of the Week. The conference will recognize a student-athlete for each sport based on their contributions to their team throughout the season.

Cross Country

Field Hockey
Conference play kicked off for the Landmark Field Hockey teams this weekend. Goucher College, Susquehanna University, Juniata College, and University of Scranton were all winners on Saturday. The Gophers defeated Drew University 2-0, while the River Hawks blanked Elizabethtown College 4-0. The Eagles shutout Moravian College 1-0, while the Royals snapped Catholic University’s 18-game conference win streak with a 2-1 overtime victory.

Men’s Soccer
Conference play also started for men’s soccer on Saturday. Catholic University defeated the University of Scranton 2-1. The Cardinals have now pushed their unbeaten streak to nine. Moravian College needed double overtime to defeat Juniata College. With two minutes left, the Greyhounds secured the 3-2-win thanks to Dave Steinbach. Drew University and Goucher College battled to a 2-2 double overtime draw. Elizabethtown College earned a 3-1 win against Susquehanna University.

Women’s Soccer
In women’s soccer action, Moravian College defeated Juniata College 3-0 to open conference play. Drew University earned its first conference win of the season, blanking Goucher College 1-0. The University of Scranton’s Becca Russo lifted the Royals to a 1-0 double overtime victory against Catholic. Russo scored the golden goal in the 102nd minute.  

Men’s Tennis
Susquehanna University was the lone winner this week in men’s tennis action. The River Hawks defeated Alvernia 9-0 on Tuesday and followed with a 6-3 win against Penn St.-Harrisburg on Saturday.

Women’s Tennis
Drew University earned its second win of the season to move to 2-1. The Rangers defeated East Stroudsburg 5-4 on Friday. Juniata College picked up its first win of the season last week. The Eagles edged Penn St.-Altoona 6-3. After competing in the ITA Northeast Region Championships, the University of Scranton earned a 7-2 win on Saturday to defeat East Stroudsburg.

Volleyball
Susquehanna extended its win streak to six thanks to a 3-0 sweep at last week's River Hawk Invitational. SU defeated Wesleyan (Conn.) 3-0 before picking up a 3-1 win against Stevens and blanking Hunter 3-0.  Juniata College picked up two wins at their Juniata Invitational. The Eagles blanked both St. Vincent and Messiah 3-0. Goucher College improved its record to 8-6 thanks to a pair of wins. The Gophers defeated New Jersey City 3-0 before earning a 3-0 win against Delaware Valley. Catholic’s Patricia Martinez helped the Cardinals defeat Gallaudet at the Worthington Classic. In that match, the junior reached a career milestone, registering her 1,000th kill – just the eighth player in program history to do so.

Men's Athlete of the Week - John O'Rourke, Catholic

(Freshman, Providence, R.I.)

Freshman John O'Rourke finished 10th out of 193 runners as Catholic finished second out of 20 teams at the Hornet Harrier Invitational hosted by Shenandoah University. O'Rourke posted his third top-10 finish this season as he completed the 6K course in a time of 19:53.7 to place 10th. He was one of only 10 runners out of 193 to break the 20-minute mark.

Women's Athlete of the Week - Alex Filiault, Catholic

(Senior,  Summit, N.J.)

Catholic senior Alex Filiault finished 22nd at the Hornet Harrier Invitational hosted by Shenandoah University on Saturday to lead the Cardinals to a sixth-place team finish. Filiault was the first Cardinal to cross the line in a time of 21:08.2.

(Sophomore, Madison, N.J.)

Sophomore Lucas Artigliere was Drew's top finisher at both of the team's tournaments this past week. He shot a 71 - just one stroke off his career-low - and placed third among 36 competitors to lead the Rangers to the team title at the Dickinson Invitational, where Drew smashed its school record with a 294. He also tied for 10th out of 96 golfers at the McDaniel Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic, where he shot a 151 (75-76) as the Rangers came in 11th in a field of 18.

Freshman Katie Pagano led a dominant and historic effort for the Scranton women's golf team on Saturday at Scranton Municipal Golf Course, as her 78 was the lowest round ever recorded in the history of the women's golf program by five shots. The Royals also posted a team score of 333, the lowest in the history of the team in an event, as well.

Scranton sophomore Allie Benadon registered the first multi-goal game of her career including the overtime game-winner in Saturday's 2-1 win at Catholic. The sophomore forward also added an assist in Wednesday's 3-0 win over Wilkes.

Defensive Athlete of the Week - Nicole Piccioni, Juniata

(Sophomore, GK - Richfield, Pa.)

Juniata sophomore Nicole Piccioni helped the Eagles to a 1-0 shutout against Moravian College in the opening weekend of conference play. Piccioni made eight saves in 60 minutes of action.

Offensive Athlete of the Week - Aidan Cserhat, Drew

(Senior, F - Taos, N.M.)

Senior Aidan Cserhat scored a pair of goals and reached the career 100-point milestone in Drew's 2-2 tie versus Goucher. With the Rangers trailing 2-0 early in the second half, he scored twice over a nine-minute stretch midway through the period, starting with a penalty kick in the 59th minute. He then struck on a free kick in the 69th minute, giving him 101 career points. Cserhat is just the seventh player in program history to reach the century mark and the first in 14 years.

Junior Eli Perry scored the game winning goal in Elizabethtown’s 3-1 victory over Susquehanna in the Blue Jays Landmark Conference opener.

(Junior, F - Nyack, N.Y.)

Scranton junior Mazie Stiles had her first career multiple-goal game against Wilkes on Tuesday, lifting the Royals to a 3-2 non-conference victory. Despite not scoring on Saturday vs. Catholic, she ignited the eventual game-winner in double overtime, sending in a corner kick that was finished by Becca Russo.

(Junior, GK - Turbotville, Pa.)

Junior Madi Welliver improved to 6-0-1 as the Susquehanna netminder following a 1-0-1 week for the River Hawks. Welliver held regionally-ranked Misericordia to just one goal and then registered her fourth shutout of the season in the Landmark Conference opener at Elizabethtown.

Freshman John Duncan posted a 4-0 record in a 2-0 week for Susquehanna. Duncan rallied from one set down to defeat Alvernia's No. 4 player before dropping only one game in his win over Harrisburg's No. 4 player. He and his partner, Joshua Sanderson, went undefeated at No. 2 doubles to improve to 5-0 in dual matches.

Women's Athlete of the Week - Mandile Mpofu, Goucher

(Senior, - Harare, Zimbabwe)

Goucher senior Mandile Mpofu went 4-0 this weekend at the Goucher Invitational where she only gave up 11 games in four-straight set wins to take the Flight B Singles title. Mpofu defeated Frostburg State's Shea Przywieczerski (6-1, 6-0), Richard Stockton's Audrey van Schalkwyk (6-2, 6-2), Immaculata's Morgan Jacob (6-1, 6-2) and Marywood's Allison Bashore, (6-2, 6-1) in straight sets.

Athlete of the Week - Josephine Morrill, Catholic

Athlete of the Week - Josephine Morrill, Catholic

(Freshman, OH - Jacksonville, Fla.)

Catholic freshman Josephine Morrill was named to the all-tournament team at the Worthington Classic hosted by Gallaudet University. In five matches this week, she posted four double doubles, totaling 58 kills and 65 digs. She averaged 3.41 kills and 3.82 digs per set on the week. At the Worthington Classic she averaged 3.29 kills and 3.71 digs per set while adding seven service aces.
