Indoor Track & Field Awards Announced
TOWSON, Md. – The Landmark Conference announced Tuesday morning the 2018-19 Indoor Track & Field All-Conference Teams.
For the second straight year, Moravian senior John Spirk was named the Landmark Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Spirk captured gold twice at the championships on Saturday. After winning the 400m dash for the second year in a row, he became the four-time champion in the 60mH.
Another familiar face to the postseason awards is Susquehanna junior Chris Petraskie. Patraskie, who has now been named the Landmark Field Athlete of the Year for the third straight season, earned a trip to the top of the podium in two different events. The junior captured the gold in the high jump for the third straight year, and collected gold in the long jump, his second time earning the honor.
Elizabethtown newcomer Sam Niles had a solid first conference championship, placing second in the 60m and 200m dashes. Niles was honored for his efforts by being named the Rookie of the Year.
Moravian head coach Jesse Baumann and his staff earned fourth straight and eighth overall Coaching Staff of the Year honors. Baumann led the Greyhounds to their 11th Landmark title on Saturday with 173 points.
The Moravian women won their 11 league title as competition wrapped up. The Greyhounds earned a 37-point win over runner-up Elizabethtown College with the Hounds climbing to the top of the podium seven times with five individual event winners and two relay champions.
Moravian senior Anna Osman was named the Landmark Women's Track Athlete of the Year after winning two individual titles and ran on two winning relays. She earned her first gold medal in the 400m dash for the second consecutive year and won the 60mH. She helped the 4x200m and 4x400m relay teams to cross the finish line first.
Catholic senior Andrea Galeano claimed the Landmark Women's Field Athlete of the Year award for the second time in her career. Galeano won the title in the women's weight throw with a mark of 17.19m, beating her closest competitor by over 2.5m. The senior then proceeded to post an 11.28m personal record in the shot put to place second overall.
Elizabethtown's Kelli Garriott and Moravian's Natalie Stabilto earned Co-Rookie of the Year honors. Garriott, the Blue Jays' indoor high jump record holder, battled with Scranton's Caroline Banas all season long as the conference's top vertical jumper. The freshman took the top spot on the podium despite both finishing with a height of 1.62m. Garriott was able to clear 1.57m in one attempt, while Banas needed all three to get over the height. This gave the Hampstead, Md. native the gold medal, the first of her career. Stabilito was the runner-up in the 800-meter run and was also fifth in the mile run.
Elizabethtown's Joel Hoffsmith and Moravian's Jesse Baumann share Women's Coach of the Year honors. Hoffsman eans the accolade for the second time, while Baumann is honored for the sixth time on the women's side.
First Team All-Landmark honors are awarded to everyone who finishes first at the Landmark Championships while second place finishers earn Second Team All-Landmark recognition.
