Moravian Claims Second Straight Presidents’ Trophy
TOWSON, Md. – After the completion of the spring season, Moravian College claimed the top spot to lead the Landmark Presidents’ Trophy standings. The Greyhounds earned three spring titles.
Moravian has now won five of the 12 Presidents’ Trophies and claims the honor for the second straight season.
After leading the pack after the winter season, where the Greyhounds made the jump from fifth place after the fall season to the top of the standings in the winter, thanks to their conference titles in men’s and women’s track & field, and men’s basketball, and maintained the lead heading into the spring after winning the women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field titles.
The Greyhounds also received two bonus points for being the runner-up in the Landmark Baseball Championship, and an additional five points for their women’s tennis championship.
Susquehanna University made the jump from fourth to second thanks to its baseball title, and appearances in the men’s lacrosse, softball, and men’s tennis championships. The River Hawks earned five additional bonus points for their baseball title, two for being the runner up in men’s lacrosse and softball, and one point for appearing in the men’s tennis semifinal.
Catholic University finished the year in third. The Cardinals post a top-five finish in seven of the 10 spring sports, including a championship title in women’s lacrosse. The Cardinal’s baseball, men’s lacrosse, and softball teams also earned a bonus point for their postseason appearance.
Elizabethtown College finished in fourth, dropping for second place after the winter season. The Blue Jays won their third straight Landmark Men’s Lacrosse championship to earn an additional five bonus points.
The University of Scranton, which won its fifth straight women’s basketball championship, finished fifth overall, followed by Drew University in sixth. Juniata College placed seventh, and Goucher College rounded out the final standings in eighth.
The Trophy is awarded based on a formula that rewards institutions for regular season conference standings as well as results in Landmark postseason competition. The point structure was revised in the summer of 2016 with different point hierarchies for team and individual sports, but the maximum number of points any team can earn is 15. The total number of points each institution earn is divided by the number of Landmark sports sponsored to determine the average.
