Landmark Announces Major Track & Field Award Winners
TOWSON, Md. –The seven Landmark outdoor track & field coaches made their major award selections immediately following the conclusion of this past weekend's championship meet.
Men's Track Athlete of the Year - John Spirk, Moravian College
Men's Field Athlete of the Year – Chris Petraskie, Susquehanna University
Men's Rookie of the Year – Ceejay Beckett, Catholic University of America
Women's Track Athlete of the Year – Sara Arbogast, Susquehanna University
Women's Field Athlete of the Year – Kylie Orndorf, Juniata College
Women's Rookie of the Year – Melissa Fitzgibbon, Elizabethtown College
Men's and Women's Coach of the Year – Jesse Baumann, Moravian College
Senior John Spirk capped off his career with three first-place finishes. Spirk captured the 400-meter dash for the first time in his career. He crossed the finish line with a time of 50.51, edging teammate Taylor Porter by 0.25 seconds. The senior shined in the 110 meter and 400-meter hurdles though, capturing the gold in each event. Spirk won both events all four years as a Greyhound. In the 110mH, he ran a 15.18 and ran a 56.17 in the 400MH. The Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year award is Spirk's second of his career.
A familiar name made a trip to the top of the podium for Susquehanna as junior Chris Petraskie earned two gold medals. In the high jump, the junior broke Moravian's Kahron Walkers record of 2.02 meters, set in 2015 with his height of 2.02 meters. He followed that performance up with a first-place finish in the triple jump, leaping his way to the gold at 13.43 meters. The junior earns his second straight Landmark Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year honor. He was also named the Indoor Field Athlete of the Year.
Sophomore CeeJa Beckett was named the Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year after strong performances across the two-day competition. In addition to his record-breaking gold medal finish yesterday, the Fredericksburg, Va. native also finished fourth in the men's high jump with a mark of 1.68m. Beckett is the first Cardinal to be named the conference Rookie of the Year.
Susquehanna's Sara Arbogast's name should sound familiar, as it should since the sophomore won four individual titles. She won the 100-meter dash (12.52), 200-meter dash (25.64), long jump (5.42m), and triple jump (11.19m). Arbogast is the third River Hawk to earn Track Athlete of the Year honors.
Juniata sent three individuals to the top of the podium. Faith Nichols won the 400-meter dash (1:00.21) while classmate Azia Kalil won the 10,000-meter run with her time of 38:43.71. Kylie Orndorf earned the gold medal in the javelin with her throw of 41.35 meters. Orndorf is the second Eagle to take home Field Athlete of the Year honors, joining Alissa Sellers (2016).
Melissa Fitzgibbon of Elizabethtown won the 5000-meter race and in the process, also set a new championship meet record. The freshman crossed the finish line with 17:51.48, breaking the record by two seconds. She also placed second in the 1500-meter race. She is the second Blue Jay to earn Rookie of the Year honors, joining Kelsey Brady (2015).
First Team All-Landmark honors are awarded to student-athletes who finish first at the Landmark Championships while second place finishers earn Second Team All-Landmark recognition. The full list of honorees is available below.
