All-Landmark Swimming & Diving Teams Announced
TOWSON, Md. – History was made Sunday evening at the 2020 Landmark Swimming & Diving Championships.
For the first time in the conference’s 13-year history, the same team won both the men’s and women’s team titles. Catholic University kept its streak intact on the men’s side as the Cardinals earned their fourth straight title. On the women’s side, the Cardinals, became the third Landmark team to win the conference. The victory marked the end of a run of dominance from Susquehanna after nine straight championships.
Drew University senior Mal Vishwanath was named the Women's Swimmer of the Year for the second time in her career after winning five gold medals to go with one bronze. Individually, Vishwanath won the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, and the 1650-yard freestyle. Her win in the 1650 gave her four-straight conference titles in the event. The senior was also a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle relay teams. She was the anchor for the 800-yard team that shattered the previous record time of 7:51.74 with their new championship time of 7:46.73.
Vishwanath was also the Landmark Conference Swimmer of the Year in 2018 and the Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year in 2017. She closes out her tremendous career with 15 Landmark Conference titles and four meet records.
The Rangers also collected Rookie of the Year honors. Katie Cashin piled up four golds, one silver, and one bronze to win the award. Cashin made her mark in the 400-yard individual medley race, setting a new meet and conference record and went on to claim the 200-yard butterfly top prize. She was also on the winning 400-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle relay teams.
Another freshman made a strong impact at the championships. University of Scranton’s Jeanna Gailius was impressive in the diving events, sweeping both the one-meter and three-meter dive over the weekend to take the Diver of the Year award from the Landmark. She is only the second Landmark Conference Women's Diver of the Year in program history, joining Colleen Barry in 2012.
In the three-day event, Scranton garnered 719 total points to finish as the runner-up. For the Royals, it marked the first time since the 2017 Landmark Championships that they registered a second-place finish as a team. It is also the sixth time in program history that Scranton has finished second at the event.
Because of that performance on the weekend, head coach Chris Brown and his staff, in their first season at the helm of the program, earned the Women's Coaching Staff of the Year award from the conference at the end of the event. On the weekend in Germantown, the Royals captured seven relay and individual conference titles combined and broke four Championship meet records.
Catholic sophomore Greg McCarthy was named the Landmark Men's Swimmer of the Year for the third year in a row after winning three individual titles and swimming on one winning relay. He earned his gold medals in the 200-yard individual medley, 400-yard individual medley, 200-yard butterfly, and 400-yard medley relay.
The Cardinals sent Ellis Prescott to collect the men’s Rookie of the Year honors. Prescott specialized in the distance events all year long for the Cardinals and earned gold medals in the 1650-free and 500-free, as well as a silver medal performance in the 800-free relay.
Catholic freshman Robert McHale earned the conference's Diver of the Year award after a phenomenal championship weekend. McHale won gold in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events and made his mark on the Catholic record books, breaking the program's former best scores with his 433.10 on 3-meter and 393.40 on 1-meter.
Catholic head coach Paul Waas and his staff helped Catholic earn 939 total points to take home the programs fourth Landmark crown, which earned them their fourth-straight men's Coaching Staff of the Year honors. The 939 points is second-most in conference history, just 34 points behind U.S. Merchant Marine’s 973 (2015).
First Team All-Landmark honors are awarded to everyone who finishes first at the Landmark Championships while second place finishers earn Second Team All-Landmark recognition.
