Vishwanath Named Women's S&D Senior Scholar Athlete

TOWSON, Md. – The Landmark Conference selects 22 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.

The honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletic representatives, and sports information directors.

Mal Vishwanath of Drew University becomes the first Ranger women’s swimming & diving athlete to earn the award, and 11th overall. She joins Aidan Cserhat (men’s soccer) who was honored this past fall.

The Senior Scholar Athlete Award for Vishwanath bookends an incredible run of Landmark Conference success, as recently she was named the Landmark Women’s Swimmer of the Year.

In the pool, Vishwanath swam to incredible heights in her four-year career. In 2016-17, she was named the conference Rookie of the Year while earning a spot on the All-Landmark First Team four times, and Second Team once. As a sophomore, she was honored as the Swimmer of the Year to go along with her three All-Conference First Team selections. That same year, she earned an invite to NCAA Nationals where she finished 15th in the 1650-free, earning her All-America Honorable Mention honors.

During her junior season, she was named to the All-Conference First Team three times and Second Team once, all while helping the Rangers to their third top-five team finish. As a senior, she was named Swimmer of the Year for the second time and earned five First Team All-Conference selections.

More impressively Vishwanath ends her Ranger career holding 11 school records and four Landmark records.

A 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, Vishwanath boasts a 3.97 cumulative grade point average as a psychology major at Drew and was named to the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll (3x) and Dean’s List every semester.

She completed an independent research project in psychology that has to do with spatial and temporal processing within the field of linguistics, and is currently writing a thesis that centers around cross-cultural body image issues in the sport of swimming, focusing on how issues of body image differ cross-culturally between Indian and American swimmers. She will present her thesis at Drew's Day of Scholars event.

Vishwanath is a member of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, and has been nominated to join the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.
