Lawson Named Women's Basketball Senior Scholar Athlete
TOWSON, Md. – The Landmark Conference selects 22 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.
The honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletic representatives, and sports information directors.
Lydia Lawson of Elizabethtown College becomes the second Blue Jay women's basketball player to earn the award and 20th selection overall for Elizabethtown.
The Senior Scholar Athlete Award for Lawson bookends an incredible run of Landmark Conference success for the two-sport athlete, as recently she nabbed a spot on the All-Landmark Conference First Team for the third straight season in women's basketball.
In the fall, she was named the conference's Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year. In the Landmark's 13-year history, she is the only player to earn the award three times and is the only Blue Jay to earn the honor. She finished her soccer career as the Landmark career record holder in goals (62) and points (137). She is also the season record holder in conference matches with 11 goals and 24 points.
On the court, Lawson led the Blue Jays to incredible heights in her four-year career, helping the program reach the conference playoffs all four years, including a runner-up finish in 2018-19.
In 2019, Lawson averaged 14.8 points per game and averaged a team-leading 5.8 assists per game. She became the 27th player in program history to record 1,000 points and ranked nationally the past two seasons in assists, assists per game, and assist to turnover ratio.
A 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 First Team selection, Lawson boasts a 3.83 grade point average as an occupational therapy major at Elizabethtown. She is a three-time Landmark Academic Winter Honor Roll selection, was named the institution's 2018 Emergent Scholar and earned Elizabethtown's Distinguished Student-Athlete Award.
Off the court, Lawson is involved in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), serves as a student-athlete mentor (SAM), and volunteers at the College's Special Olympics Swim Meet. She acts as a student-athlete speaker at open house events and takes part in the school's Into the Campus initiative.
