Scranton's Russo Named Women's Lacrosse Senior Scholar Athlete
TOWSON, Md. – University of Scranton senior Becca Russo has been selected as the 2020 Landmark Women's Lacrosse Senior Scholar Athlete.
The Landmark Conference selects 22 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.
The honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, faculty athletic representatives, senior woman administrators, and sports information directors.
Russo also received the Landmark's Women's Soccer Senior Scholar-Athlete award in the fall and is the first player in Scranton history to receive the honor in two different sports. She is the second Royals' women's lacrosse player to receive the honor after Bridget Gallagher accomplished the feat in 2016.
Russo holds an impressive 3.85 GPA as a Nursing major and will earn a degree from Scranton at the end of the month.
The South Windsor, Conn., native was a two-sport All-American during her time at Scranton and was named the recipient of the O'Hara and Carlesimo awards during last week's Senior Student-Athlete Celebration.
Additionally, she has earned CoSIDA Academic All-American and All-District honors and is a six-time member of the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll.
On the lacrosse field, Russo is a two-time All-American, three-time All-Region and three-time All-Conference selection. She started 58 of 59 games in her career and ranks third in program history in caused turnovers (97) and draw controls (185) along with fifth in ground balls (191).
Russo started all six games this season and tallied 12 ground balls, eight caused turnovers and 25 draw controls before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The defender is a member of a senior class that has led Scranton to 41 victories over the last three-plus seasons and three consecutive Landmark Conference title game appearances. Scranton finished the 2019 season with a program-best 16-3 record and finished the season ranked in the Top 25 (No. 20) for the first time in program history.
