Catholic's LaPointe Named Men's Outdoor T&F Senior Scholar Athlete
TOWSON, Md. – Catholic University Joseph LaPointe has been selected as the 2020 Landmark Men's Outdoor Track & Field Senior Scholar Athlete.
The Landmark Conference selects 22 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.
The honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, faculty athletic representatives, senior woman administrators, and sports information directors.
Following winning Rookie of the Year at the 2017 Landmark Indoor Championships, LaPointe began his first outdoor season with a Track Athlete of the Week selection on April 3, 2017. At the close of the season, the freshman finished first in the 1500 meters to earn All-Landmark Conference First Team Honors at the Landmark championships.
As a sophomore, he helped Catholic earn fifth place overall at the 2018 conference championships when he ran the 800 meters in 1:57.25 to claim sixth and the 1500 meters at 4:03.69. During his final outdoor season, LaPointe was part of the 4x400 meter relay team that took first with a time of 3:26.03 and earned First Team honors. Currently, he is fourth in the Landmark in both the 800 meters (1:55.64) and the 1500 meters (4:02.19) and was named to the 2020 USTFCCCA All-South/Southeast Region Team for indoor.
Off the track, LaPointe has been involved in a variety of internships and organizations. He interned at Next Century Corporation, the Naval Research Laboratory, and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. At Catholic, he is a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and the Institute of Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Additionally, LaPointe volunteered with Habitat for Humanity during his sophomore and senior year and participated in Catholic's 2020 Research Day.
LaPointe graduated with a 3.91 grade point average in electrical engineering and made Catholic's Dean's List every semester and is a three-time selection to the Landmark Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll.
LaPointe is the 38th Catholic student-athlete to be honored as a Landmark Senior Scholar Athlete and the third for men's outdoor track and field, joining Joe Quigley (2013) and John Brewer (2016).
All-Time Senior Scholar Athletes
