Goldstein Named Landmark Men's Tennis Senior Scholar Athlete

TOWSON, Md. – The Landmark Conference selects 22 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.

The honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletic representatives, and sports information directors.

Lloyd Goldstein of Drew University becomes the second Ranger men's tennis student-athlete to earn the award 13th overall. He joins Aidan Cserhat (men's soccer), Mal Vishwanth (women's swimming), and Anthony Castronova (men's golf) to earn the award for the 2019-20 academic year.

A solid contributor for the Rangers throughout his four-year career, Goldstein posted a 33-15 singles record while competing at the fourth through sixth spots in the lineup. He transferred to Drew from Wesleyan University for the spring semester of his freshman campaign and promptly went 5-1 in singles play. He  followed up with a solid sophomore season in which he went 12-7, then notched a 10-5 mark as a junior. He closed out his career by going 6-2 this past season, helping the Rangers to a 12-0 record in the shortened campaign. In one of the highlights of his career, he clinched a 5-4 victory over Roanoke College in the final match of the team's Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. with a victory at No. 6 singles.

A two-sport athlete at Drew, Goldstein was also a member of the swimming & diving team over his last two seasons. At the Landmark Conference Championships, he placed 10th in the 200-backstroke, 11th in the 200-butterfly, and 11th in the 400-IM as a senior, helping the Rangers to their best finish at the meet (third) in program history.

Goldstein was also heavily involved at Drew away from athletics and assembled an impressive list of accomplishments. A computer science major and statistics minor with a 3.98 grade point average, he was a five-time Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll recipient (three for tennis, two for swimming) as well as an ITA Scholar-Athlete. A member of Phi Beta Kappa and the American Statistical Association, he earned the Winifred Baldwin Fellowship, awarded to one or more Baldwin Honors Scholars with excellent academic records at Drew who show great promise of continued distinction in graduate or professional school. He also won the Steve A. Lemanski Prize, awarded to students excelling in applied mathematics with preference given to students intending to pursue a career related to the field of actuarial science, and the Cegedim-Dendrite Scholarship, awarded without regard for need to one or more students who demonstrate the potential for achievement and an exceptional interest in information technology. He will be starting the statistics PhD program at The Ohio State University this coming fall.

Goldstein produced an honors thesis titled "What Makes a Good Quarterback? Analysis of Longitudinal NFL Data Using Latent Using Variable Clustering Methods" and defended it in a public forum on Zoom. A member of the Drew Review Editorial Board, he also performed independent studies in both computer science and statistics, including building a web application from scratch to make data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics more accessible. In addition, he was a member of the Drew University Orchestra and served as captain of Drew's Starcraft II team.
