Scranton Awarded 2019-20 Landmark Presidents’ Trophy
TOWSON, Md. – The Landmark Conference released its final 2019-20 Presidents' Trophy standings. The standings reflect 14 of the 22 conference championships due to the cancellation of the 2020 spring season.
Following the 2019-20 fall and winter seasons, The University of Scranton secured the trophy for the first time, collecting a total of 127 points for an average of 9.07. Catholic University finished second with 113 total points (8.07 averaged), followed by Elizabethtown College (101.5/7.25), Susquehanna University (101/7.21), Moravian College (79/7.18), Drew University (61.5/5.59), Juniata College (51/3.65), and Goucher College (37/2.64).
Scranton won three championships in 2019-20. Field Hockey earned its first conference title, defeating Susquehanna 4-1 in the championship game. Women's Soccer took home its seventh title, blanking Susquehanna 3-0, and women's basketball collected its fifth straight conference crown with a 63-42 victory against Catholic.
"Winning the Landmark Conference Presidents' Trophy for the first time is special," said Director of Athletics Dave Martin. "I would like to congratulate all of our student-athletes and coaches, and our staff and administration. This truly is a testament to their hard work and their dedication.
"This year didn't go as planned, per se, and we faced a lot of challenges in the spring. But, I'm so absolutely proud of the way our student-athletes, coaches and staff have approached everything. It's fitting that our year ends this way."
The winter season was a bright spot for the Royals, with men's and women's basketball each making the postseason. The men's program earned a trip the championship game after finishing the regular season 19-8 and 10-4 in the Landmark. The men's swimming & diving team placed fourth at the championships while the women's program placed second. At the 2020 Indoor Track & Field championships, the women's team placed third while the men placed fifth.
"Winning this year's Landmark Conference Presidents' Trophy is an incredible honor," said University of Scranton President Scott R. Pilarz, S.J. "It adds to the rich history of intercollegiate athletics we have at The University of Scranton, and is a true testament to the hard work our student-athletes, coaches, administration, and staff have put into achieving excellence. I am grateful for their dedication to the University during what has been a unprecedented academic year."
Golf was the only spring sport to be awarded a champion. The 2019-20 Landmark men's team title was determined by the results from the 2019 Landmark Fall Preview, which took place October 5 at the Scotch Valley Country Club and was hosted by Juniata College. At the preview, Scranton fell one stroke short (310) of champions Goucher College (309).
The Landmark women's team title was also determined by the results from the 2019 Landmark Fall Preview, which took place October 19 at the Queenstown Harbor Lakes Golf Course and was hosted by Goucher College. Scranton finished in third, shooting a team score of 401.
The Trophy is awarded based on a formula that rewards institutions for regular season conference standings as well as results in Landmark postseason competition. The point structure was revised in the summer of 2016 with different point hierarchies for team and individual sports, but the maximum number of points any team can earn is 15. The total number of points each institution earns is divided by the number of Landmark sports sponsored to determine the average.
