Landmark Announces Women's Soccer Awards
TOWSON, Md. – For the fifth time in 15 years, a University of Scranton women’s soccer player was selected the Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Year as Grace Elliott earned the honors, as voted on the league’s eight head coaches.
Susquehanna University’s Marley Clendenin was named Defensive Player of the Year and Scranton’s Niamh Healy nabbed Rookie of the Year accolades.
Royals head coach Colleen Pivirotto and her staff garnered Coaching Staff of the Year.
Elliott joins Chelsea Paskman (2009, 2010), Samantha Russo (2013), and Jamie Hreniuk (2016) to earn Offensive Player of the Year honors. She tied first in the league in goals scored with nine and tied for third in total points with 19. She led the Royal offense who ranked first in the league with 50 goals, 37 assists for a league-leading 137 points.
Clendenin is the second River Hawk to garner Defensive Player of the Year honors, joining former teammate Madi Welliver (2019). She helped SU to an 11-4-1 overall record and a 6-1-0 conference mark. She guided a defense that posted five shutouts and a goal against average of 0.96, which ranked third in the league. Against conference teams, the River Hawks allowed just four goals for a goal against average of 0.56. Clendenin is making her third appearance on the All-Conference First Team as a defender.
Healy, who played in her first collegiate season this fall after missing out on her rookie campaign due to the pandemic in the fall of 2020, finished the fall season ranked in the top three in goals scored (t1st – 9), assists (2nd – 5), and points (2nd – 23). She scored at least one goal in seven games, including a multiple-goal game against Lebanon Valley College and Moravian University. Healy is the fifth Royal to be named Rookie of the Year, joining Laura Gibbons (2007), Samantha Russo (2010), Christina Akalski (2013), and Shae Guifoyle (2017).
Pivirotto and her staff earned their fourth Coaching Staff of the Year honor after guiding the Royals to an unbeaten overall record of 16-0-1 and a 6-0-1 conference mark. Scranton earned the top seed in the Landmark Conference Women’s Soccer Championship where the Royals took home their second straight and eighth overall conference title since joining the Landmark in 2007. Additionally, the Scranton defense posted 14 shutouts this fall and conceded just four goals.
