Butler Named Men’s Basketball Senior Scholar Athlete

TOWSON Md. – The Landmark Conference selects 22 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.

The honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletic representatives, and sports information directors.

Susquehanna University senior Bryce Butler became just the second River Hawk to earn Senior Scholar accolades. Butler joins Joel Patch, who earned the award in 2009.

Despite not playing in the 2020-21 season, Butler was a force on the court throughout his career. As a junior, he finished the season ranked fourth in Landmark with team second-best 1.6 steals per game, fifth in league with team third-best 42 steals, and second for SU with .450 (94-209) field goal percentage and .359 (28-78) three-point field goal percentage. Additionally, he was third on team with 28 three-point field goals made, fourth for SU with 89 rebounds, and fifth on team with 233 points, 94 field goals made, 31 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per game.

Butler helped SU to an overall record of 21-8 (11-3 Landmark) in 2019-20, including the River Hawks first-ever Landmark Championship title as the No. 1 seed. Susquehanna advanced to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Tournament Second Round. The team led the conference in scoring, steals per game, and free throw percentage, and ranked second in league in assists per game and three-point field goal percentage and third in field goal percentage.

Off the court, Butler is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and served as a two-year team captain for the River Hawks.

A Finance major with a cumulative grade point average of 3.22, Butler made the Dean's List twice (2017, 2019) and the Landmark Winter Academic Honor Roll in 2019 and 2020. He is expected to earn conference academic honor roll honors this spring.
