Byrne Named Women's S&D Senior Scholar Athlete
TOWSON, Md. – The Landmark Conference selects 22 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.
The honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletic representatives, and sports information directors.
In a career filled with several individual accolades and achievements, senior Lauren Byrne of The University of Scranton women's swimming team adds another one as she was named the 2021 Landmark Conference Senior Scholar Athlete for women's swimming & diving.
Byrne is the third member of Scranton's women's swimming & diving team all-time to earn the Senior Scholar Athlete award from the Landmark, joining Lauren Wieland (2009-10) and Sara Franciscovich (2013-14).
In the pool, Byrne has already solidified her spot in history and will go down as one of the top performers ever for the Royals.
A 16-time Landmark Conference champion at four Landmark Championship meets, Byrne was named the Landmark Female Swimmer of the Year twice (2019 & 2021), while also earning the Landmark's Rookie of the Year accolade in 2018. She is just the second female swimmer in the history of the program to be named Landmark Swimmer of the Year twice, joining Erin O'Connor (2008 & 2009).
In 2020, Byrne qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in the 200-IM, going on to earn All-American accolades in the event to become just the third swimmer in program history to accomplish that feat. In all, she holds nine school records (five in individual events), three overall Landmark Conference records, and four Landmark Conference Championships records, as well.
In the classroom, Byrne has been just as impressive, boasting a 3.90 grade point average as a member of the Universities DPT program, earning her bachelor's degree in Exercise Science from Scranton in May.
For her work in the classroom, she has been recognized, as well. In 2020, she was named a CSCAA Scholar All-American, and is a two-time recipient of the CSCAA Academic Honorable Mention award. In 2019, she was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District squad, and has been named to the Landmark's Winter Academic Honor Roll in each of the last three seasons
