Catholic Sweeps S&D Titles; All-Landmark Teams Announced
TOWSON, Md. – Catholic University defended its Landmark Conference Men’s & Women’s Swimming and Diving championship titles.
As has been the case with most collegiate competition this academic year, the 2021 Landmark Swimming & Diving Championship was modified due to COVID-19 protocol. The swimming portion was condensed from its normal in-person, three-day schedule, to a virtual three-day event hosted by individual campus sites. Diving took place over the weekend of March 5-6, also at individual campus sites.
The Cardinals completed the sweep for the second consecutive year after becoming the first school to do so in the 13-year history of the conference a year ago.
On the men's side, Catholic finished with 693 points, followed by Drew (435), Scranton (345) and Juniata (52).
On the women's side, Catholic finished with 577 points, followed by Scranton (496), Drew (443) and Juniata (271).
University of Scranton senior Lauren Byrne was named the Women’s Swimmer of the Meet for the second time in her career after winning five gold medals, one silver, and one bronze. Individually, Byrne won the 200-individual medley, 100-breaststroke, and 200-backstroke. Her win in the 200-IM gave her four-straight conference titles in the event. The senior was also a member of the winning 400-medley and 400-free relay teams. She helped the 200-free relay to the silver and 200-medley relay to the bronze medal.
Byrne was also the Landmark Conference Swimmer of the Meet in 2019 and Rookie of the Meet in 2018.
Drew University’s Amira Ahmad Hadri followed in the footsteps of Mal Vishwanath (2017), and fellow teammate Katie Cashin (2020) by earning conference Rookie of the Meet honors. Hadri is the second straight selection and third in the last five years for the Rangers. Hadri collected four gold and three silver medals to win the award. Her individual title came in the 50-free, while her two second-place finishes were in the 100-backstroke and 100-free. The freshman led off for the winning 200-medley relay team and was the second leg on the winning 200-free and 400-free relays.
Scranton’s Jeanna Gailius swept the 1-meter and 3-meter dives over the weekend to take home her second Diver of the Meet honor – winning in 2020. In the 1-meter, the sophomore earned a total of 389.60 points and totaled 380.60 points in the 3-meter event.
Scranton head coach Chris Brown was named Coach of the Meet on the women’s side for the second straight year. Brown led the Royals to a runner-up finish with a total of 496 points.
In the 14-year conference history, no male swimmer has been named the Landmark Conference Swimmer of the Meet four consecutive years. Catholic University’s Gregory McCarthy changed that, earning the award after winning three individual titles and swimming on three winning relays and one second-place relay. He earned his gold medals in the 200-individual medley, 400-individual medley, and 200-butterfly. He swam the third leg of the winning 200-medley and 400-medley relays and was the anchor on the 800-free relay. His wins in the 200-IM and 400-IM gave him four-straight conference titles in those events.
Additionally, McCarthy was also named the Rookie of the Meet in 2018.
Finn Armitt became just the second Ranger to be named the Landmark Men’s Rookie of the Meet. Armitt collected one individual title in the 100-butterfly, a runner-up finish in the 200-butterfly, and helped the 400-medley relay to a first-place finish. He also helped the 200-medley, 200-free, and 400-medley relays to a silver medal.
Drew senior Angelo Angione captured his first Male Diver of the Meet after sweeping both boards. In the 1-meter, Angione earned a total of 258.80 points. He was the lone 3-meter competitor. He finished with 333.90 points.
Catholic head coach Tyler Ziegler helped Catholic earn 693 total points to take home the programs fifth Landmark crown, which earned the Cardinals’ their fifth-straight men's Coach of the Meet honors.
First Team All-Landmark honors are awarded to everyone who finishes first at the Landmark Championships while second place finishers earn Second Team All-Landmark recognition.
