Landmark Reveals Women's Lacrosse Award Winners
TOWSON, Md. – The Landmark Conference coaches voted Jill Henson of The University of Scranton as the 2021 Landmark Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year, while teammate Emily Schum earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. Juniata College's Grace Gibbs nabbed Rookie of the Year accolades and Catholic University head coach Meghan McDonogh and her staff earned Staff of the Year honors.
Henson, a senior attacker, earns her second nod on the Landmark First Team. She currently ranks third in the conference in assists (19) and points (48), and is fifth in goals with 29. She becomes just the second Royal to earn a Player of the Year honor, and is the first conference Offensive Player of the Year since the Landmark adopted the change last summer. Henson and the Royals will head to our Nation's Capitol to battle top seeded Catholic in Saturday's title game. This marks the fifth straight year that Scranton and Catholic will meet in the Landmark Conference championship game.
Schum is the first-ever Landmark Defensive Player of the Year. She earns the title, along with her second First Team honor, after finishing the regular season with 23 groundballs and 54 draw controls. The junior defender has helped anchor a Scranton defensive unit that has a league-leading 82 caused turnovers, and has collected 139 groundballs.
Gibbs, a freshman midfielder, started in all nine games for the Eagles. Gibbs totaled 31 goals and an assist. Her 31 goals are third in the Landmark. She also picked up 21 ground balls, 29 draw controls, and caused 15 turnovers. Gibbs is also the first JC women's lacrosse player to earn First Team honors since the Eagles started varsity lacrosse in 2018.
McDonogh and her staff have earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors for the sixth time in 13 Landmark seasons. Catholic advanced to its 13th consecutive Landmark Conference championship game, having appeared in each one since the league's inaugural season in 2008.
