Softball Major Award Winners Revealed
TOWSON, Md. – After posting a perfect regular season record, Moravian College highlighted the 2021 Landmark Conference Softball All-Conference Teams.
The All-Conference teams and award winners are nominated by and voted on by the leagues seven head coaches.
Eight-time conference champion Moravian led the way with nine selections, including being selected for three of the four major awards. Brooke Wehr was recognized as Player of the Year while teammate Madison Hummel picked up Pitcher of the Year honors. Greyhound head coach John Byrne and his staff earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
University of Scranton's Sarah Stepnowski garnered Rookie of the Year accolades.
Through 28 games, Wehr has made her presence known throughout the conference. The senior leads the league in batting average (.538), slugging percentage (.914), runs batted in (37), runs scored (31), doubles (13), and triples with five. Wehr is now the eighth Moravian player to be named Player of the Year and the third consecutive Greyhound.
Hummel becomes the 11th Greyhound and fifth straight Moravian pitcher to earn Pitcher of the Year. The sophomore kept the tradition of dominant pitching, posting a perfect 13-0 record with a league-best 0.99 earned run average. In 85 innings pitched, she has helped the Greyhound pitching staff keep their Landmark counterparts to a .239 batting average while striking out 39 batters.
Stepnowski is one of four freshmen to earn All-Conference honors and joins teammate Jessica Stadler as a First Team selection. At the plate, Stepnowski is hitting .493 with 21 RBI, five doubles, four triples, two home runs, and has drawn four walks. She is the second Royal to be named Rookie of the Year, joining current teammate Jennifer Sweeney who won the award in 2018.
Byrne now has a career slate 891-249, has posted a 28-0 overall record this spring and a 22-0 mark in Landmark action. The Blue & Grey are also ranked No. 4 in the nation in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Top-25 poll.
