River Hawks Men’s Tennis Advances to Landmark Semifinals

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna University men's tennis team extended their season with a win in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Championship Saturday afternoon. Fourth-seeded Susquehanna (7-3) knocked off fifth-seeded The Catholic University of America (3-5) with a 5-1 victory.
The River Hawks will now face top-seeded Drew University (8-0) on Tuesday, May 4, at 4:00 p.m. at Drew's indoor courts in Madison, N.J. During the regular season, Drew handed SU a 7-2 defeat in Susquehanna's regular-season finale. The Rangers advanced to Tuesday's semifinals with a 5-0 win over eighth-seeded Elizabethtown College on Saturday as well.
How It Happened
Doubles
Susquehanna opened up a 2-0 lead as the duo of sophomores John Duncan and Joshua Sanderson posted an 8-0 shutout at No. 2 doubles followed by the tandem of junior Emil Vyskocil and sophomore Conor Ryan notching an 8-6 triumph at No. 1 doubles.
Vyskocil and Ryan have now won four consecutive doubles matches and boast a 5-3 record.
The River Hawks went into singles action with a 2-1 lead after Catholic's Dom Mazzeo and Christian Papalambros tallied an 8-6 victory at third doubles.
Singles
Duncan and first-years Alex Baker and Tim Basta picked up wins at No. 4, No. 6, and No. 3 singles, respectively, to clinch the quarterfinal victory at 5-1.
Duncan and Baker both won in straight sets, dropping only one game between the two of them, while Basta needed three sets, 6-2, 0-6, 7-5, to dispatch Bruno To.
