Baseball Major Awards, All-Landmark Honorees Announced
TOWSON, Md. – The seven Landmark Conference baseball coaches voted and chose Juniata College senior Isaac Maclay as the 2021 Baseball Player of the Year. University of Scranton sophomore Daniel Johnson earned Pitcher of the Year honors, while Susquehanna University's Teagan Duffie nabbed Rookie of the Year.
Scranton head coach Mike Bartoletti and his staff received Coaching Staff of the Year accolades.
Maclay is the third Eagle to earn Player of the Year honors, joining Dan Kauffman (2008), and John Martinez (2011). The senior ranked in the top-three in batting average (.396 – 3rd), runs batted in (27 – 2nd), and home runs (8 – 2nd). Maclay hit safely in 19 of 26 games played this season, having multiple hits in 13 of those games. In the field, he committed just six errors at first base for a fielding percentage of .966 and totaled 163 putouts in 175 chances.
Johnson was a model of consistency for the Royals this season, as the hurler posted an earned run average of 0.68 through eight appearances. He finished the shortened season with a perfect 5-0 record in 39.2 innings pitched, with 38 punchouts. In the elimination game of the conference baseball championship, Johnson went seven innings, allowed three hits, one walk, and recorded six strikeouts. Additionally, Johnson is the second Royal to earn Pitcher of the Year honors, and the first since 2013 when Corey Gorman took home the award.
Duffie, a freshman starting pitcher, pitched in 28.0 innings this season with an earned run average of 4.18 and 27 strikeouts. He is the second straight River Hawk starting pitcher to receive to be named Rookie of the Year, and fifth overall since SU joined the conference in 2007.
Bartoletti guided the Royals to a 16-8 conference record and the No. 1 seed in the Landmark Baseball Tournament. On Sunday, the Royals won the program's first-ever Landmark baseball title, defeating Elizabethtown College, 6-3.
