Sweeney Named Softball Senior Scholar Athlete

TOWSON, Md. – The Landmark Conference selects 22 senior scholar-athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics. 

The honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletic representatives, and sports information directors.

Jennifer Sweeney of the University of Scranton is the fourth Royal to be selected as the Landmark’s Softball Senior-Scholar Athlete. She joins Stephanie Romano (2015), Shannon Stricker (2017), and former teammate Megan Zinn (2021). 

Sweeney had a stellar career while playing in a Royal uniform, as she was named to the Landmark All-Conference First Team all four years in addition to being voted the Rookie of the Year in 2018. During her time at Scranton, the Royals won 155 games and was the 2019 conference champion. 

Nationally, Sweeney was honored as a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American three times, earning Third Team honors in 2018, and is a four-time NFCA All-Region honoree.

A dual-threat, Sweeney was efficient at the plate and in the field. She leaves Scranton as the program’s all-time leader in homeruns (32), RBI (156), and total bases (327). In the circle, she is the all-time leader with 60 wins, and holds single-season program records in wins (18 – 2018), strikeouts (111 – 2019), and shutouts (7 – 2019).

She ends her career ranked in the top five in hits (187 – 2nd), runs scored (112 – 3rd), doubles (42 – 3rd), and strikeouts (336 – 2nd). 

The Wind Gap, Pennsylvania native studied Occupational Therapy at Scranton and was named to the College of Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District Team this spring. She was additionally named to the Scranton Dean’s List four times and Landmark Spring Academic Honor Roll three times.
