Susquehanna Claims Fourth Presidents’ Trophy
TOWSON, Md. — For the third time in five years, Susquehanna has claimed the Landmark Conference Presidents’ Trophy. The Orange and Maroon won the Presidents’ Trophy in 2009-10, 2011-12, and 2013-14.
Susquehanna ranked first in the Presidents’ Trophy after the winter season, and tacked on a baseball championship this spring, bringing their team total to two. In addition to the two Landmark Championships, Susquehanna earned eight runner-up finishes.
Overall, the Orange and Maroon won championships in women’s swimming & diving, their sixth consecutive, and baseball. Susquehanna qualified for the Landmark playoffs in seven of 12 sports and finished in the top half of the standings in 17 of 20 sports.
Susquehanna finished with an 8.55 average, while three-time Presidents’ Trophy winner, Moravian College, earned runner-up honors with a 7.69 average. Elizabethtown College wrapped up the year in third at 7.58 and Catholic was fourth with a 7.52 average.
Moravian and Elizabethtown took home eight of the 20 Landmark Championships this year. The Greyhounds won titles in men’s and women’s indoor track & field, softball, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field to help them jump from fifth place after the winter to season to second. The Blue Jays, who led the field after the fall season, took home titles in men’s and women’s cross country and women’s tennis to finish third.
Catholic rounds out the top half of the standings with five Landmark titles this year. The Cardinals won field hockey, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, and both men’s and women’s lacrosse. The field hockey team won its fourth title since joining the Landmark in 2007, while the women’s lacrosse program won its fourth consecutive title, ninth overall. Catholic finished as the runner-up in women’s basketball.
Scranton claimed the men’s soccer and women’s basketball titles to finish fifth in the standings with an average point total of 7.02, while Juniata won their lone conference title in the fall, claiming its ninth consecutive trophy to finish sixth (5.56). The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy won its ninth Landmark title and Goucher men’s tennis rounds out the 2015-16 champions.
The Presidents’ Trophy was created in the inaugural year of the conference to recognize the best overall athletics program. The Trophy is awarded based on a formula that rewards institutions for regular season conference standings as well as results in Landmark postseason competition.
The point structure was revised with different point hierarchies for team and individual sports, but the maximum number of points any team can earn is 14. The total number of points each institution earns is divided by the number of Landmark sports sponsored to determine the average.
