TOWSON, Md. - The Landmark Conference selects 23 senior scholar-athletes each year to recognize the top student-athletes in each sport based on academics and athletics.
The honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletic representatives, athletic communications, and diversity, ethnicity, and inclusion designee.
David Hoyt, a fifth-year goalkeeper for Drew University, has been named the 2024 Landmark Conference Men's Soccer Senior Scholar-Athlete. Hoyt becomes the third member of the Rangers' men’s soccer program to earn this recognition.
A biochemistry and molecular biology major with minors in anthropology and public health, Hoyt has achieved an impressive 3.97 GPA. A Baldwin Honors student, he is completing his thesis and is an active member of both the Tri Beta Biology Honor Society and the Gamma Sigma Epsilon Chemistry Honor Society. Hoyt’s academic achievements also include being named a Schering Plough Scholar and earning Drew University's Anna-Lisa Barofsky Prize in Biology for presenting the best research paper at a scholarly biology conference. Additionally, he is a recipient of the Robert S. Needham Memorial Scholarship and was co-winner of the Sherman Plato Young Scholar Award, recognizing his character, scholarship, and extracurricular involvement.
Hoyt's academic excellence has been nationally recognized as well. In 2024, he was named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team, a distinction honoring student-athletes for their combined performance in athletics and academics. He was subsequently selected as a CSC Academic All-America finalist. He is a four-time member of the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll and was named to the Landmark All-Sportsmanship Team in both 2023 and 2024.
Overcoming several setbacks during his career, he earned the starting goalkeeper position in his fifth year and captained the team for two seasons. In 2024, Hoyt started 18 of 19 matches, recording a 1.03 goals-against average, a .743 save percentage, and four shutouts. Beyond soccer, Hoyt showcased his athletic versatility as a setter for Drew’s men’s volleyball team during its inaugural season in 2022.
A leader within the Drew community, he has served as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), a Writing Fellow, and a Launch Mentor for first-year students. He has also mentored peers as part of the Empowerment in STEM program. His commitment to research is evident through three summers spent at Drew’s Summer Science Institute, working in an immunology and molecular biology lab, and through a summer study abroad experience in South Africa as part of Drew’s ShortTREC program.
In addition to his campus involvement, Hoyt has participated in community service initiatives. He joined Volunteers Without Borders on a trip to New Orleans, where he helped plant trees to protect the Bayou, and he presented research at the Independent College Fund of New Jersey Conference. Hoyt has also earned the Citizen Campaign Certificate in Leadership and No-Blame Problem Solving and completed 41 hours shadowing an orthopedic surgeon.
