TOWSON, Md. – Every Friday, the Landmark Conference spotlights one of our standout student-athletes in the Friday Focus series. This week’s feature highlights Brandon Lavitt, a member of the Susquehanna University men’s basketball team. From growing up around the game to big-time wins and the preparation that goes into each matchup, Lavitt shares what fuels his success on and off the court.
What’s your favorite memory competing for Susquehanna?
Beating ranked Johns Hopkins in Puerto Rico this year.
What drew you to your sport originally?
My dad coached and played basketball at UNC. I grew up going to all of the UNC games, wanting to play college basketball just like him.
How do you prepare the night before a big game or meet?
I watch a lot of film on the team we are about to play while also watching my specific matchup.
Favorite class and professor?
My favorite class at Susquehanna has been Corporate Financial Management. It taught me the power of investing and the importance of starting early while you are in college. One of my favorite professors at Susquehanna ever was Professor Hao and Mrs. Shuman. Not only were they great teachers, but they also always supported the men’s basketball team at all of our games.
Who inspires you most on your team, and why?
Audric Washington inspires me the most out of everyone on our team. He is one of the hardest-working teammates I have ever had, and he always pushes me to be at my best and gives me the confidence to be successful.
What’s your go-to hype song?
“Raise Up” by Petey Pablo is a North Carolina staple.
Postgame meal of choice?
We have a couple of guys who always go to Longhorn Steakhouse in Selinsgrove after a big win with our families.
Hidden talent most people don’t know you have?
I know how to play the trombone.
Favorite athlete growing up?
People always said I looked like Blake Griffin, so I always tried to improve my vertical when I was younger, so I could jump like him.
First jersey number — and why?
23. My AAU coach was the last one to wear 23 at UNC before Michael Jordan.
First college game or meet — what do you remember?
We played Arcadia at home in my first game. We won by 15-20, and I think I had 10 points and a couple of rebounds. I remember guarding a couple of guys who were 4-5 years older than me early on in my career.
One word your teammates would use to describe you?
Loyal. They make fun of me for being a diehard Hornets fan.
