Friday Focus with Bailey McFeaters

Elizabethtown College | Women's Volleyball

TOWSON, Md. - Friday Focus is the Landmark Conference’s weekly student-athlete spotlight, giving us a chance to get to know the people who make up our conference both on and off the field.

This week, we’re catching up with Elizabethtown College women’s volleyball student-athlete Bailey McFeaters, who reflects on becoming a team captain, finding a sense of home at Elizabethtown, and the lessons volleyball has taught her beyond the court. Bailey also shares her passion for occupational therapy and why being a Division III student-athlete has allowed her to embrace all the different parts of college life.

What are you studying, and how did you become interested in that field?
I am studying Occupational Therapy! I have always been interested in learning about health and wellness, and I always knew I wanted a job working with people. When I discovered OT, I knew it was the perfect fit for me. It gives me the opportunity to learn about my area of interest while also being able to use my knowledge to give someone with a disability the best quality of life!

What accomplishment are you most proud of, either academically, athletically, or personally, and why?
I am most proud of becoming a captain for my team. Being captain goes far beyond a player's skill set and stats. I strive to be the best teammate I can be and to put team success over individual success. I have felt both honored and grateful to have been selected for this role, and I am proud of the person I am on and off the court to make myself fit to lead my team.

If you could go back to your first year of college, what advice would you give yourself?
If I could go back to my first year of college, I would tell myself that I have nothing to worry about. I will soon meet some of my best friends, find a sisterhood within my team, and Elizabethtown will feel like home very soon! Branch out and make yourself uncomfortable; you never know who you'll meet along the way or what memories you'll make!

How has athletics helped prepare you for life after college?
Athletics has prepared me for life after college by teaching me important skills like time management, communication, balance, and work ethic. I have learned to work hard to reach my goals and how to handle myself in difficult situations. Playing a sport has turned me into a well-rounded person, which will benefit me in a future job, but also in parts of everyday life!

What does being a Division III student-athlete mean to you, and how has that experience shaped who you are?
To me, being a Division III student-athlete means having the luxury of being a part of a sports team and playing the game I love while also being able to have a very normal college experience as a student. My family and friends are a large part of who I am, and Division III has allowed me to not only be a volleyball player, but also a daughter, sister, friend, and so much more. I feel like I get the best of every world, which has contributed to becoming a well-rounded individual.
