MADISON, N.J. – The Landmark Conference has announced that
32 student-athletes have been honored with selection to the 2008
Spring Landmark All-Academic Team. Two male and two female athletes
from each of the eight Landmark institutions were selected for the
team which honors athletes who have excelled athletically and
academically. Nominees could compete in any of the Landmark spring
sports and must be a sophomore or older with a cumulative GPA of
3.0 or better. The Landmark Conference sponsors baseball,
men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and
women’s tennis, softball, and men’s and women’s
outdoor track and field during the spring season.
The Spring All-Academic Team features 17 seniors, 12 juniors and a
trio of sophomores. In addition all eight spring sports sponsored
by the Landmark Conference are represented with at least one
student-athlete. The Landmark Conference selected an All-Academic
Team for each of the three athletics seasons during the year.

Alys Cheatle from Hickory, N.C. was a track and field standout for
Catholic and earns her second All-Academic honor of the year after
also being recognized in the fall. She was a first-team
All-Conference performer in outdoor track when she won the 10,000
at the Landmark Championship and was third in the 5,000. A
biochemistry major, she holds one of the highest GPAs in the
Catholic athletics department.
Emily McGlynn of Tallahassee, Fla. helped the Catholic
women’s tennis team reach the Landmark Championship, and was
a first-team All-Conference pick as both a singles and a doubles
competitor. She lost only one conference singles match during the
year, and was unbeaten in conference doubles play. McGlynn is
majoring in philosophy and match and captured several academic
honors in her senior year.
Mike Michalski, a native Ellicot City, Md., helped the Catholic
baseball team earn the Landmark Championship. He hit .296 for the
Cardinals as a designated hitter and had 16 hits in 16 starts. He
also scored 15 runs, and he contributed a pair of hits and one run
in two of the team’s wins en route to the conference title.
He was a Landmark Academic Honor Roll selection and is majoring in
civil engineering.
Andrew Smith from Arlington, Tenn. was a strong performer for the
Catholic track and field team. He was a first-team All-Conference
performer at the Landmark Championships by winning the 10,000 while
also adding a fourth-place finish in the 5,000. Smith was also an
All-Academic selection in the fall, and he is a Landmark Academic
Honor Roll honoree as an electrical engineering major.
Kerry Crowley, from Montvale, N.J., ranks as one of the best
softball players in Drew history. She is Drew’s all-time
leader in home runs and doubles and ranks in the Top 5 in hits, RBI
and runs. An ECAC All-Star and Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Region
selection as a junior, Crowley graduates as an economics major. She
has been an academic honor roll honoree and was an NJAIAW Woman of
the Year.
Mark Monroe, from Houston, Texas, was as solid in the classroom as
he was in the heart of the defense for the Landmark Champion Drew
lacrosse team. Monroe started 13 games and appeared in 15 while
leading Drew to the Landmark and ECAC Titles. He recorded 22
groundballs on the season. An economics major, Monroe is a
three-time conference academic honor roll selection and graduated
with honors.
Jennifer Schoepflin, from Sewell, N.J., was a two spot
All-Landmark Conference selection. A psychology major at Drew, in
conjunction with an Elementary and Special Education major,
Schoepflin was an All-Landmark honoree in both field hockey and
women’s lacrosse. A shut-down defender on the lacrosse field,
Schoepflin was the recipient of Drew’s prestigious Larry
Horner Athletic Leadership Award.
Jason Woods, from Irvington, N.Y., was a first team All-Landmark
selection in tennis, and a standout in the lab. A neuroscience
major, Woods graduated with a GPA above 3.9. He graduates with four
conference titles including the inaugural Landmark Conference crown
this season. A first team selection in singles, Woods was also
All-Landmark Conference second team in doubles.
Emily Blatter, a native of Lexington, Va., was a four-year
standout for Goucher’s women’s lacrosse team. She was a
three-time All-Region pick and was a first-team All-Landmark
selection as she scored 68 goals with 33 assists. She scored at
least one goal in 43-straight games, second-longest streak in
Division III history. She is an English major with a minor in peace
studies.
Alex Boucher of North Wales, Pa. was a key piece for the Goucher
men’s lacrosse team that reached the Landmark Championship
match. He was a second-team All-Conference selection as a
specialist. He scored 11 goals with two assists, and also
contributed 30 ground balls. Boucher was the recipient of
Goucher’s Scholar Athlete Award and is studying
economics.
Chris Covey from Exeter, N.H. enjoyed a solid career for the
Goucher men’s tennis program. Playing primarily at second
singles he recorded seven overall wins and was 4-3 in Landmark
competition on the year. He was also honored with the Josephine E.
Fiske Gopher Pride Award for the 2007-08 year and was a Landmark
Academic Honor roll selection. Covey is a sociology major.
Sheba Newman-Blount of Lanham, Md. was a strong all-around
performer for the Goucher track and field team. She placed in the
top-six in three different events at the Landmark Championships,
highlighted by a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles.
Newman-Blount is majoring in psychology with minors in English and
Spanish and earned a spot on the Landmark Academic Honor Roll in
her junior year.
Tara Carl, a native of Duke Center, Pa., was a Second team
All-Landmark Conference selection for the Juniata softball team.
She was second on the team, eighth in the Landmark Conference, in
hitting with a .359 batting average, and led the Eagles with 33
runs scored. Carl ranked in the top-eight among Landmark leaders in
several categories. Carl is majoring in earth and space science at
Juniata.
Pam Mansell of Centre Hall, Pa. was also a valuable contributor
for the Juniata softball team. She made 17 starts in the circle,
finishing the season with a 5-7 record over 76.2 innings pitched
and notched 25 strikeouts. Academically, she posted the highest
cumulative grade points average among any Juniata female
student-athlete competing in a spring sport and is majoring in
unified elementary and special education.
Aaron Rhodes of Huntingdon, Pa. had a strong season for the
Juniata men’s tennis team. He finished the season with a 7-7
overall singles record, 4-3 in Landmark matches and in doubles
competition, he teamed with Jonathan Skoner for a 6-1 record in
Landmark play. Rhodes is studying business and information
technology at Juniata and earned a spot on the Landmark Academic
Honor Roll.
Andrew Snyder of Punxsutawney, Pa. was an anchor on the pitching
staff for the Juniata baseball team. Second team All-Landmark
Conference selection for the Juniata baseball team, after posting a
6-3 record with a 4.65 earned run average over 60.0 innings pitched
while ranking fourth in the conference in strikeouts. Snyder
graduated with a degree in computer science.
Ian Box, a native of Charlestown, Mass., was a dominating force in
men’s tennis for Moravian. He was named the Landmark Player
of the Year in just his sophomore season as he went unbeaten in
conference play at first singles. His record on the year was 13-1
in singles competition. Box is studying biology at Moravian and
claimed a spot on the Landmark Academic Honor Roll in his first
year of eligibility.
Beth Paly of Whitehall, Pa. was a key component on the Moravian
softball team that won the Landmark Championship. She was named the
Landmark Conference Player of the Year and a First Team Landmark
All-Conference honoree, had a team leading 51 hits, a .418 average
and 30 runs while helping the team go 12-0 in Landmark play. Paly
graduated with a degree in elementary education, history and
mathematics.
Erica Spatz, from Pennsauken, N.J., graduates as one of the most
accomplished players in the history of the Moravian women’s
lacrosse program. In her senior year she set school marks with 62
goals, 15 assists and 77 points while being named to the Landmark
All-Conference First Team and helping Moravian to the best record
in program history. Off the field she earned a degree in
mathematics and elementary education.
Nathaniel Tussey of Perkiomenville, Pa. helped the Moravian
men’s track and field team win the first Landmark Outdoor
Track & Field Championship and place 17th at the NCAA
Championships. He earned All-America status by placing fifth in
both the 400-hurdles and 110-hurdles at the NCAA Championships. He
also won two events at the Landmark Championships. He graduated
with a degree in biology.
Justin Champagne of Mt. Bethel, Pa., helped the Scranton baseball
team set a new program record with 26 victories in 2008. He
excelled as a pitcher with a 5-3 record and as an infielder where
he was named second-team All-Conference. An economics major,
Champagne was selected as an ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-American, just the third Scranton baseball player to earn that
honor.
Thomas Kornobis, a native of Merrick, N.Y., was a second-team
All-Conference performer for the Scranton men’s lacrosse team
that earned a program-record 12 victories. He led the Royals with
33 assists in 2008, the second-consecutive season he has led the
team in assists, while also scoring 12 goals to rank second in
points. He was a Landmark Academic Honor Roll selection and is
majoring in finance.
Erin Moreau of Nanuet, N.Y. was a four-year letterwinner for the
Scranton softball team. She posted a career high with a .354
batting average in 2008 as the Royals established a new program
record for victories with 27. She finished her career with 72 hits
and a .282 career batting average. Moreau was a three-time
conference Academic Honor Roll selection and earned her degree in
exercise science.
Gretchen Sullivan from Kenmore, N.Y. enjoyed a stellar four-year
career for the Scranton women’s tennis team. She sits in 10th
place in school history in career singles wins and is second in
career doubles victories. She was a three-time All-Conference
selection, including second-team All-Landmark in 2008. Sullivan
graduated with a degree in criminal justice and earned a spot on
the 2008 Landmark Academic Honor Roll.
Jeffrey Brooks of Cogan Station, Pa., helped Susquehanna to a
runner-up finish at the Landmark Outdoor Track & Field
Championships. He placed seventh in both the 800 and 1,500 at the
championship meet. Brooks is on the All-Academic Team for the third
time in his junior year. He’s working towards a degree in
accounting and was also a Landmark Academic Honor Roll pick for all
three seasons in 2007-08.
Patrick Donegan from Lewisburg, Pa. completed a strong all-around
junior year by helping Susquehanna place second at the Landmark
Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He placed in the top-8 in
both hurdles events at the meet to earn points for the Crusaders.
He also was a key contributor for the Susquehanna men’s
soccer and swimming teams during the year. Donegan is majoring in
psychology.
Ashley Moormann of Stanhope, N.J. capped a memorable career by
being named the Landmark Women’s Field Athlete of the Year at
the Landmark Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She won two
events at the meet and was third in two others. Moorman was named
the Landmark Women’s Indoor Track Senior Scholar Athlete and
earned a degree in early childhood and elementary education.
Shelby Werronen, a native of Concord, Ohio, was a standout on the
court and off for the Susquehanna women’s tennis team.
Playing only in the fall season she recorded a singles record of
5-4 in singles competition to go along with a 2-1 mark in doubles
play. The junior accounting major studied abroad during the spring
season, but has also earned conference academic honor roll status
during her career.
Ryan Merritt, a native of Phoenix, Md., was a significant
contributor for the USMMA men’s lacrosse team. The team
co-captain was a first-team All-Landmark selection as he ranked
third on the team with 23 goals. He was first on the team with a
pair of game-winning goals, including an overtime goal against
Landmark foe Drew. A maritime operations and technology major he
was an Academic Honor Roll pick.
Brandon Scott from Las Vegas, N.V. enjoyed a solid career for the
USMMA baseball program. He started 29 games in his senior campaign,
and pounded out 37 hits while adding 28 RBI and 23 runs. His .378
batting average was the third-highest on the team, and he also
knocked out three home runs. Scott is majoring in maritime
operations and technology and earned a spot on the Landmark
Academic Honor Roll.
Jennifer Swanson of Tucson, Ariz., played a major role in the
solid season for the USMMA softball team in her junior year. She
ranked in the top-five in the team in batting averaged, hits, home
runs, RBI and extra base hits, and led the team with 30 runs
scored. She boasts one of the top cumulative GPAs in the athletics
department with a challenging marine engineering systems major.
Karen Taylor of Raleigh, N.C. was an effective player in the field
and as a pitcher for the USMMA softball team. She made 12 starts in
the circle, striking out 41 batters in 69 innings with a solid 4.77
ERA. She also produced 25 hits and 19 runs offensively for USMMA.
Taylor claimed a spot on the Landmark Academic Honor Roll and is
majoring in logistics and intermodal transportation.
