MADISON, N.J. – The Landmark Conference has selected six
athletes as Landmark Senior Scholar Athletes for their respective
fall sports. A committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics
directors and sports information directors selected the recipients,
choosing one senior from each of the fall sports sponsored by the
conference. The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 and are
selected based on their accomplishments in all areas of college
life including athletics, academics and other extracurricular
activities. The award is the most exclusive awarded by the
Conference with just 20 honorees for each academic year.
The 2010 Landmark fall sport Senior Scholar Athletes are: Men's
Cross Country: Adam Scipione (Walpole, Mass./Walpole), Goucher
College; Women's Cross Country: Tara Chiarella (Hallstead,
Pa./Montrose Area), Moravian College; Field Hockey: Eliza Grumbein
(Allentown, Pa./William Allen), The Catholic University of America;
Men's Soccer: Lane Gould (Greenville, Texas/Greenville), United
States Merchant Marine Academy; Women's Soccer: Chelsea Paskman
(Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South), The University of Scranton;
Women's Volleyball: Steph Strauss (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills),
Juniata College.
Scipione capped a strong career for the Goucher men's cross
country program with his highest-ever finish at the Landmark
Championship. He placed 16th at the meet, helping the Gophers to a
fifth-place team finish at the meet, matching its best ever finish.
He was the Gophers' second runner throughout his senior campaign
and ran his fastest time of the season at the Landmark
Championships. In the classroom Scipione boasts a stellar
cumulative GPA while majoring in philosophy and business
management. He has twice been selected Landmark All-Academic, has
represented Goucher at Landmark SAAC meetings and has volunteered
for a panel to help high school students make healthy choices about
athletics and competition.
Chiarella was a top runner for Moravian throughout her career
earning All-Conference honors once in her career. She got off to a
strong start by being named Rookie of the Year at the Landmark
Championships in 2007 when she placed fourth at the meet and helped
Moravian earn a second-place team finish. She had one She has two
top-50 finishes at NCAA Regionals in her career highlighted by a
39th-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Regional. Chiarella has been on
the Dean's List four semesters at Moravian while majoring in
psychology with a minor in Spanish. She also earned Academic Honor
Roll recognition three times during her career while producing an
excellent cumulative GPA.
Grumbein has claimed nearly every imaginable honor in her senior
year while helping Catholic to one of the best seasons in program
history. She earned All-America honors as a defender after also
being chosen as the Landmark Player of the Year, an All-Region
performer and the ECAC Tournament Most Valuable Player as Catholic
earned the tournament title. She earned All-Region and
All-Conference honors twice in her career and the Cardinals were
54-28 during her four seasons. Off the field Grumbein is majoring
in biology, and was named to the Landmark All-Academic Team. She
has also been named to the NFHCA All-Academic squad three times in
her career and is a three-time Landmark Academic Honor Roll
choice.
Gould was a standout for the USMMA men's soccer team that earned
back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament. He was a co-captain of
the team his senior season when he scored three goals and had five
assists and helped the Mariners reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA
Championships. He was a two-time All-Conference pick for USMMA and
finished his career with 10 goals and 11 assists, including two
game-winning goals in the 2009 season. Gould is working towards a
degree as a ships officer and has maintained an outstanding GPA in
a rigorous 20-plus credit schedule. He was a Landmark All-Academic
honoree is 2009, is a three-time Academic Honor Roll choice and
place guitar in the USMMA chapel praise band
Paskman closed a decorated career by earning All-America honors
for the second time in her career and she helped Scranton claim its
second Landmark Women's Soccer Championship and reach the NCAA
Championship. She is a four-team first-team All-Conference
selection and was voted the Landmark Offensive Player of the Year
as a junior and a senior and also earned All-America and All-Region
honors in both those seasons. She was also the Landmark Rookie of
the Year in 2007. She has produced an excellent cumulative GPA as a
psychology student over three years, and Paskman has twice been
chosen as a Landmark All-Academic performer while also earning
Academic Honor Roll status three times.
Strauss has been a standout on and off the floor for the Juniata
volleyball program over four seasons. She was named an All-America
for the second time following her senior season, and has also been
an All-Region and All-Conference pick in each of her junior and
senior years. She helped Juniata reach the NCAA semifinals three
times and the NCAA Championship match once. Strauss is the
President of the Juniata SAAC, is an executive board member of the
Student Alumni Association and has been named an ESPN Academic
All-American. A sports marketing and management major, she is a
six-time Dean's List honoree.
The Landmark Conference will select a Senior Scholar Athlete in
each of the 20 varsity sports sponsored by the conference over the
course of the 2010-11 academic year.
