MADISON, N.J. – The first winner of the Landmark
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Sportsmanship Cup remains
the award's only winner as Juniata College claims the Cup for the
second-consecutive year.
In a much closer finish than the first year of the award,
Juniata finished with a score of 7.00, narrowly edging Moravian
College and Goucher College which produced scores of 6.786 and
6.625 respectively. The standings were tighter across the
conference in the second year of the award, with all eight
institutions finishing within three points of the top finisher.
The Landmark SAAC Sportsmanship Cup was adopted prior to the
2009-10 academic year and is designed to promote good sportsmanship
throughout the conference and to recognize the Landmark institution
that demonstrates the best overall sportsmanship over the course of
the year. The Cup is awarded based on a formula that compiles the
votes of each Landmark coach in consultation with their team
captains ranking the top-3 sportsmanship programs in their
respective sports. The formula also takes into account the number
of sports an institution sponsors.
In discussing the results Landmark Commissioner John Reeves
said, "I'm pleased to see the balanced voting among all our
members, which suggests that each of our institutions is working to
do the right things in regard to sportsmanship. Also of importance
to me are the team sportsmanship winners which are also significant
achievements for those programs, coaches and student-athletes."
Juniata's win came on the strength of a balanced voting that saw
them finish among the top vote recipients in six sports, including
the top spot in four sports.
Moravian and Goucher both also finished atop the voting in four
sports to challenge for the top position and finish in the top-3 in
the final standings. It marks the second-consecutive year that the
two teams have finished in the top-3 in the standings as Goucher
was the runner-up a year ago and Moravian placed third.
In addition to the overall Sportsmanship Cup, the Landmark
recognizes the team which earns the most points in each sport as
the team sportsmanship winners. Each sport winner, including ties,
are listed below. In the second year of the Landmark Conference
SAAC Sportsmanship Cup all eight Landmark institutions finished
either first or second in the voting in at least one sport to help
produce the balanced final standings.
