MADISON, N.J. – The Landmark Conference has announced the
selection of 32 student-athletes to the 2010 Spring Landmark
All-Academic Team. Two male and two female athletes from each of
the eight Landmark institutions were selected for the team which
honors athletes who have excelled athletically and academically.
Nominees could compete in any of the Landmark spring sports and
must be a sophomore or older with a strong cumulative GPA.
The spring All-Academic Team has a wide distribution of class
representation led by 12 seniors on the team in their final year of
eligibility. They are joined by 10 juniors and 10 sophomores. There
are a pair of competitors earning All-Academic accolades for the
third time, with seven others earning their second All-Academic
selection. All eight spring sports sponsored by the Landmark
Conference are represented with at least one selection. The
Landmark Conference will select an All-Academic Team for each of
the three athletics seasons during the year.

Kelly Carioto from Pittsburgh, Pa. has been a
standout for the Catholic women’s track & field teams in
her first two seasons. She helped the Cardinals place third at the
Landmark Outdoor Championships with a second place finish in the
shot put, an event in which she holds the Landmark record. This is
her first All-Academic selection after a pair of Academic Honor
Roll selections and she is studying history at
Catholic.
Laura Haring of Mt. Sinai, N.Y. helped the
Catholic women’s lacrosse team to its third-straight Landmark
Championship. A captain of the team her senior season she was an
All-Conference attacker in her junior campaign and finished her
four-years with 98 career goals. A politics major, she is a member
of three different honor societies as well as the Catholic
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Marc Saxton, a native of Ellicott City, Md.,
helped the Catholic men’s lacrosse team to the third-biggest
victory improvement in Division III and an appearance in the
Landmark Championship match. He was a second-team All-Conference
choice in his sophomore year when he ranked second on the team in
goals and points. He earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring
semester and is pursuing a degree in economics.
Kristopher Reynolds, from Cooperstown, N.Y..,
has been a key figure for the Catholic track & field teams. He
has several high finishes in Landmark meets in his career despite
battling injury for much of this season. He is a two-time
All-Academic team selection, is a member of the National
Engineering Honor Society while majoring in bio-medical
engineering, and posted a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring
semester.
Stacie Brown of Upper Marlboro, Md. has been
a standout for the Drew women’s lacrosse team helping the
team to consecutive Landmark Championship matches. She earned
All-Conference honors for the third-straight season as well as her
third All-Region selection as she led the Rangers in scoring. She
has twice earned Academic Honor Roll and is majoring in political
science with minors in Spanish and sociology.
Kati Eggert of Denville, N.J. earns
All-Academic honors for the second time in her career after being
chosen during the winter. A three-sport athlete she led the Drew
softball team in hitting this spring with a .352 average and was
also a Landmark-best 15-for-15 in stolen bases. An art history
major, she’s a multiple time Academic Honor Roll selection
for the Drew field hockey and swimming teams.
Brad Mendelson of Owings Mills, Md. closed a
standout career for the Drew men’s lacrosse team by being
selected as the team MVP. The goalkeeper was a first-team
All-Landmark choice as a senior when he led the conference in goals
against average and saves per game. He earned a degree in economics
at Drew and was named to the USILA Scholar All-America Team and is
a three-time Academic Honor Roll choice.
Drew Obergfell from Cranford, N.J. enjoyed a
strong season for the Drew baseball team in his sophomore campaign.
Starting 35 games he was third on the team in doubles and fourth in
hits for the Rangers. He has accumulated a strong GPA in two years
while studying political science, and has also claimed Academic
Honor Roll status. He also works closely with the athletics
department in a game management role.
Colleen Cole from Holliston, Mass. captures
All-Academic accolades for the second time in as many years for the
Goucher women’s lacrosse team. She was an All-Region
selection after leading the Landmark in goals and points, while
also earning All-Conference recognition for the second time. She
was the co-recipient of Goucher’s Scholar-Athlete Award and
is working towards a degree in international justice.
Zach Martin, a native of Victor, N.Y., has been
a mainstay for the Goucher track & field program. He earned
points in a pair of events for the Gophers at the 2010 Landmark
Championships, placing fourth in the 3,000-steeplechase and eighth
in the 10,000. This is his second All-Academic Team selection,
having earned the nod on the 2008-09 Winter Team. He earned his
diploma with a degree in English.
Joan Pulupa of Gaithersburg, Md., is a
three-time letterwinner for the Goucher women’s tennis team.
She posted a 6-9 singles record this past season and also had a
team-best nine doubles wins. She boasts a stellar GPA in with a
double major in biology and physics and was the co-recipient of
Goucher’s Scholar Athlete Award which goes to a junior who
has excelled athletically and academically.
Billie Weiss of Lutherville, Md. was a top
performer for the Goucher men’s tennis team, claiming his
third letter in his junior year. He was a part of one of
Goucher’s top doubles teams in his junior campaign and has
collected 13 singles wins over his career. He earns All-Academic
distinction for the second time, and is a two-time Academic Honor
Roll selection as he is studying communications with a minor in
Spanish.
Matt Bailey from East Petersburg, Pa., closed
his career by winning the 10,000 at the 2010 Landmark Track
Championships, and also placed fourth in the 5,000. He set a new
Conference record in the 10,000 and holds the school record in both
events. He graduated magna cum laude with a degree in biochemistry,
is a member of the chemistry and biology honor societies and played
bass in the Juniata Orchestra.
Nicholas Bauer of Glen Ridge, N.J. has made an
immediate impact for the Juniata track & field team in his
first two seasons. He claimed All-Conference honors by winning the
long jump at the 2010 Landmark Championships, helping the Eagles
place third. He has a strong GPA through two years as a physics
major, is a member of the Society of Physics Students and
volunteers with Juniata’s EMS group.
Caley McCool of Spring Mills, Pa. earned
All-Conference honors in softball for the second time after a
strong junior year for Juniata. She is also a two-time All-Academic
selection and was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District
choice. She is studying communications and public relations,
finished second in Juniata’s 2009 Bailey Oratorical contest,
and has been selected to the Dean’s List six times.
Hilary Walsh, from Waynesboro, Pa., had a
strong years with the Juniata women’s tennis team. She was
6-12 in singles play as a junior, raising her record to 8-12 for
her career after not playing collegiate tennis as a freshman. She
also had three conference doubles wins. An international business
major, she will be studying in China in the fall of 2010 and is
active in Juniata’s Student Alumni Association.
Jonathan Baltz, a native of Easton, Pa.,
helped the Moravian baseball team claim its first Landmark title as
he was a first-team All-Conference performer at third base. He hit
.319 on the year with 51 hits and 35 runs scored for the Greyhounds
as the team set a new program record for victories. A psychology
major, he has twice earned Academic Honor Roll distinction along
with his first All-Academic Team selection.
Ian Box of Charlestown, Mass. closes his
career by earning All-Academic honors for the third time. A
three-time first-team All-Conference singles choice for the
Moravian men’s tennis team, he won 43 singles matches for his
career and was the Landmark Player of the Year as a sophomore. He
has earned Dean’s List honors three times, also played on
Moravian’s club ice hockey team, and earned a degree in
biology.
Jami Fein from Blue Bell, Pa. continued the
strong start to her collegiate career as she was named the Landmark
Women’s Tennis Player of the Year for the second time in as
many seasons. She was 19-4 in singles action for Moravian,
including a 12-3 mark at first singles. Off the court she is
studying accounting, and earned Academic Honor Roll honors this
spring while earning her second Dean’s List
distinction.
Anna Heim of Moorestown, N.J. closed a
decorated collegiate career by winning the pole vault at the NCAA
Division III Outdoor Championship. She set a new meet record at the
NCAA meet and set a new NCAA Division III record when she won the
event at the ECAC Division III Championship. Heim was also the NCAA
Indoor champion while serving as a student-teacher and earned her
degree in art education.
Carl Caceres, from Teaneck, N.J., has been a
first-team All-Conference choice in men’s tennis each of his
three seasons as he helped Scranton reach its first Landmark
Championship match. He posted 12 singles wins and eight doubles
wins this season. He earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District
honors and is a two-time Academic Honor Roll choice while studying
philosophy, theology and religious studies.
Justin Champagne of Mt. Bethel, Pa. closes
his career by earning All-Academic honors for the second time. The
senior was a two-time All-Conference performer in baseball where he
pitched and played outfield. He earned first-team ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-America honors as a senior, the second time he’s
been chosen an Academic All-America, and he graduated with a degree
in economics.
Beth Lappin from Westminster, Md. closed a
strong career for the Scranton women’s tennis team. She
helped Scranton qualify for the Landmark postseason the past three
years, including a berth in the 2008 Championship match. She played
in 13 singles matches and 10 doubles matches in her career. She
earned three Academic Honor Roll selections and graduated with a
strong GPA as an occupational therapy major.
Ashley Regan of Old Forge, Pa. capped her
three-year career for the Scranton softball team by earning
All-Conference honors. She played in 68 games over three seasons,
hitting .271 and helping Scranton to a pair of Landmark postseason
appearances. A two-time member of the Landmark Academic Honor Roll
she graduated with a degree in accounting.
Kelli Holota from Spring Lake, N.J. enjoyed a
noteworthy career for the Susquehanna softball team, capped by a
program record 34 wins and the program’s first NCAA
appearance in her senior season. She is a three-time All-Conference
honoree and ranks among school leaders in several categories. A
biology and secondary education major, she was a member of two
honor societies and the vice president of her sorority.
Bruce Osborn, of Sayre, Pa., ranked among the
Susquehanna leaders in singles victories for the men’s tennis
team in his junior year. Finished the year with a 10-2 record,
including 10-1 at sixth singles, which was the most wins in the
Landmark at that position. Off the court he is majoring in
political science and is a member of the Political Science and
Social Science Honor Societies.
Cait Pflaum a native of York, Pa. concluded
her career by earning All-Conference honors at the Landmark Outdoor
Track & Field Championships. She placed second in the 10,000,
an event where she owns the school and Landmark record, helping the
team place second at the meet. She closed her academic career with
a perfect GPA in her final semester as she earned a degree in
English and secondary education.
Joe Zamadics of West Chester, Pa. enjoyed a
strong start to his collegiate career, earning All-Conference
honors in cross country, and indoor and outdoor track in all six
seasons. He placed second in the 800 and 1,500 at the 2010 Landmark
Outdoor Championships and was a member of a winning relay. An
economics major he had a perfect GPA in the spring semester and was
an Academic Honor Roll selection.
John Hubach from Avon, Ohio was a key figure
for the USMMA baseball team in his sophomore campaign. He started
all 31 games for the team collecting 23 hits, scoring 21 runs while
adding 14 RBI and 11 stolen bases. He earned Landmark Academic
Honor Roll honors as a marine engineering and shipyard management
major, and boasts the second-highest GPA among USMMA’s spring
sport male athletes.
Adam Jerlow of Parker, Colo. was big
contributor for the USMMA men’s lacrosse team that earned a
spot in the Landmark postseason. He was fourth on the team with 17
goals, while also adding six assists. His six man-up goals were
tied for second-best on the team. He has a strong GPA through his
first two years as a marine engineering systems major, and earned
Academic Honor Roll status this spring.
Laurellee Kopras of Bruce, Wis. started every
game at catcher for the USMMA softball team. She was a consistent
performer for the Mariners, producing 16 hits with seven runs and
six RBI while providing a steady influence for the team pitching
staff. Her cumulative GPA as a marine engineering systems major is
the highest of any USMMA spring athlete, and she claimed Academic
Honor Roll laurels this season.
Rebekah Schuppel, a native of Waldorf, Md.,
closed a strong career as a member of the USMMA track & field
and cross country teams. A consistent performer, she turned in some
of her best performances in the fall as part of the cross country
team. She finished her college career with a degree in marine
engineering systems and earned Academic Honor Roll honors four
times over the course of three years.
