Spring Athletes Picked For All-Academic Team

MADISON, N.J. – The Landmark Conference has announced the selection of 32 student-athletes to the 2011 Spring Landmark All-Academic Team. Two male and two female athletes from each of the eight Landmark institutions were selected for the team which honors athletes who have excelled athletically and academically. Nominees could compete in any of the Landmark spring sports and must be a sophomore or older with a strong cumulative GPA.

The spring All-Academic Team is heavily populated with seniors as 14 student-athletes earn the distinction in their final season. The additional honorees are 10 juniors and four sophomores. This is a second selection or more for seven All-Academic picks, and three of the choices have been selected to All-Academic teams on three or more times. In addition all eight spring sports sponsored by the Landmark Conference are represented with at least one selection. The Landmark Conference selects an All-Academic Team for each of the three athletics seasons during the year. Due to administrative issues one institution is not represented, but eligible students will be honored in the future.

Shawn Brubaker, from Lancaster, Pa. has performed well as a thrower for the Catholic track and field teams in his first two seasons. He's produced several top performances, including a sixth-place finish in the hammer at the Landmark Championships and earned Landmark Field Athlete of the Week honors once during the year. He is working towards a degree in politics and has earned Dean's List honors.

Sam Daubman of Plainedge, N.Y. played a large role for the Catholic softball team that reached the finals of the Landmark postseason. She started all 40 games, compiling 11 hits, 10 RBI, four doubles and three walks. She was also a steady contributor in the field with 76 putouts and 67 assists. She is a two-time Landmark Academic Honor Roll pick, and a Dean's List selection while studying mechanical engineering.

Rosemary Montani, a native of Lewiston, N.Y., played a part in Catholic women's tennis earning a conference postseason berth. She was a solid 4-1 in singles play on the year, including an unbeaten record in conference matches, and also added three wins as a double competitor. She boasts a stellar GPA while majoring in nursing at Catholic and has earned Dean's List and Landmark Academic Honor Roll status.

Tom Scotto, from Spring Lake, N.J., was a key performer for the Cardinals men's lacrosse program that made a second-straight Landmark postseason appearance. He was the top faceoff man for the team, winning 61-percent of the faceoffs, and also leading the team with 112 ground balls. He also scored a goal and had five assists. A civil engineer major, he is an Academic Honor Roll and Dean's List member.

Stacie Brown of Upper Marlboro, Md. graduated as one of the most decorated women's lacrosse player in Drew history. She is a four-time All-Region and All-Conference selection, and ranks third in school history in career goals (207), and fourth in points (266). Off the field she earned a degree in political science, served as a peer mentor, is a participant in the Language in Motion Program and was a Dean's List regular.

Kati Eggert of Denville, N.J. is a regular on the All-Academic Teams, earning her fifth selection after closing her career. Batted .339 in her senior season and ranks third all-time in school history in stolen bases and is a two-time All-Conference pick in softball. A rare three-sport athlete, she earned a degree in art history, was the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Secretary and a Drew's student Kiwanis Club.

Evan Martens of Avon, Conn. enjoyed a fine all-around career with the Drew baseball team. He was voted the team MVP in 2011 with a 3.24 ERA which ranked second on the team, and was described as the hardest worker on the team. He received a pair of scholarships from Drew, was a Dean's List honoree each of his college semesters and he earned a degree in biology.

Ari Young from Sparta, N.J. was a strong contributor to the Drew men's lacrosse program. He played in all 14 games as a senior, scoring three goals and producing three assists and he helped the team to 36 wins over his four seasons. He was as successful in the classroom, earning two prestigious Drew scholarships while collecting a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology. He also claimed eight Dean's List honors.

Bryce Carson from Shillington, Pa. was a significant contributor in his first season as a starter for the Goucher lacrosse team. As a close defender, he supplied Goucher with one goal , one assist, 47 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers while the team finished atop the conference standings after the team claimed a conference title last year. He has accumulated a strong GPA through two years as a management major.

Joan Pulupa, a native of Gaithersburg, Md., enjoyed an All-Conference senior season for Goucher women's tennis. She was a first-team All-Conference pick in doubles while also winning six times at first singles and helped the team finish atop the regular season standings. A two-time All-Academic selection, she graduated with a degree in biology and physics and was Goucher Scholar Athlete winner as a junior.

Hannah Southworth of Durham, N.H., ranks as one of the top distance runners in Goucher history and capped a strong career this spring. She ran to a top-10 finish at the Landmark Championships in the 10,000 and is one of only two Goucher women to run faster than 42:25 in the 10,000. Off the track she earned a degree in sociology and Spanish and eight times earned Landmark Academic Honor Roll status.

Billie Weiss of Lutherville, Md. closes his career for Goucher men's tennis with his third Landmark All-Academic selection. He is a four-time letter winner for the Gophers, and appeared at every singles position over his four seasons, capping his career with a three-win singles year as a senior giving him 15 for his career. He graduated with a degree in communications with a minor in Spanish.

Amanda Gerlach from Mesa, Ariz., is a two-year starter for the Juniata softball team. She has hit .290 over her two collegiate seasons, including 23 hits this past season as the team's starting third baseman. She's served as a volunteer softball and volleyball, is a member of the Business and Juniata Honor Societies and is active on the Juniata Activities Board, while studying business and life sciences.

Russ Gray of Johnstown, Pa. produced a strong junior year on the baseball diamond for Juniata. He posted a .343 batting average with 23 hits, nine runs scored and 12 RBI, which came after he hit .241 in his sophomore year. He's studying accounting and is a member of the Business Honor Society. He's also a student representative to the Juniata Budget Committee, and serves on the college's Audit Committee.

Laura Gregory of Morrisonville, N.Y. posted seven wins for the Juniata tennis team as a senior. She was also 4-10 in doubles in her senior year, and had 11 singles win over her career, despite missing her junior year while studying abroad in Mexico. During that year she studied the sexual health knowledge of middle school students, earned Dean's List honors eight times as a health, conflict and society major.

Ceth Parker, from Sabillasville, Md., has excelled for three years in track & field and cross country. He was an All-Conference performer in cross country, and had an eighth-place finish in the 1,500 at the Landmark Championship. He is pursuing a degree in biology, has spent two years as a member of Juniata's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and is a five-time Landmark Academic Honor Roll choice.

Brendan Close, a native of Bethlehem, Pa., had a dominant season on the diamond for Moravian, earning All-America honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association and D3baseball.com. He was also named Landmark Pitcher of the year after going 10-0 with a 1.00 ERA, four shutouts and 100 strikeouts. He has twice earned Landmark Academic Honor Roll honors while studying financial economics.

Shannen Mohr of Slatington, Pa. has enjoyed a prolific first two seasons for Moravian softball. She was picked as the Landmark co-Player of the Year, and went on to also be named a second team All-American. She hit .500 for the year with 51 hits, 32 runs, 11 doubles and three homers. She earned Landmark Academic Honor Roll status this spring, and has a strong GPA through two years as a biology major.

Abigail Schaffer from Easton, Pa. won a pair of National Championships in the pole vault for Moravian over the past year. She won the title at both the Indoor and Outdoor NCAA National Championships, setting meet records in both, and also won the event at the Landmark Indoor and Outdoor Championship. She is pursuing a degree in management and marketing and was a Landmark Academic Honor Roll choice.

Gary Zack of Mountain Top, Pa. also won an NCAA Division III Track & Field National Championship, as he bested the field in the javelin at the 2011 NCAA meet. His winning toss of 67.36 meters set a new school record and he also won the javelin at the Landmark and ECAC Championships. Zack is a four-time Academic Honor Roll selection and is working towards a degree in nursing at Moravian.

Carl Caceres, a native of Teaneck, N.J., earns his second All-Academic honor after a stellar senior year. He finished his career with 44 singles wins, helping the team to two Landmark Championship matches. He was Rookie of the Year in 2008 and was a four-time All-Conference player. Off the court he has twice been selected Academic All-District while earning a degree in religious studies, theology and philosophy.

Katie Slade of Buckingham, Pa. closed an outstanding all-around career this year for Scranton women's lacrosse. She earned All-Conference honors four time, and finished among the Scranton all-time leaders in several categories including first in caused turnovers and fourth in ground balls and draw controls. An elementary and special education major, she was a three-time Landmark Academic Honor Roll pick.

Chris Stallone from South Plainfield, N.J. was a standout on and off the baseball field for Scranton. He was a three-time All-Conference performer in the outfield, and closed his career with a .401 lifetime batting average. In the classroom, the finance major had the highest GPA of all Scranton senior student-athletes, was a two-time Academic All-America pick and earned a prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship.

Annie Zeleniak of Taylor, Pa. ranks as one of the most productive players in Scranton softball history. She was named Landmark co-Player of the Year as a senior and was a two-time All-Region honoree. She posted a .442 career batting average and is the Scranton all-time leader in hits, doubles, RBI and runs. A three-time Academic Honor Roll pick, she graduated with a degree in biochemistry.

Bruce Osborn from Sayre, Pa. earns his second All-Academic Team selection after concluding his career for the Susquehanna men's tennis squad. A team captain, he went 9-5 in singles in his senior year while also earning seven doubles wins. He had a team-high 10 singles win as a junior. He earned a degree in political science and was a member of political science and social science honor societies.

Kate Reese, of Wellsboro, Pa., is a two-sport performer for Susquehanna. This spring playing primarily at the shortstop position for the Crusaders, she hit .235 with 10 runs and a home run, while committing only two errors in the field. Has earned three varsity letters total while also competing for Susquehanna's volleyball team. She's studying accounting and has a strong cumulative GPA through three years.

Joe Zamadics a native of West Chester, Pa. had another strong year for the Susquehanna track & field team. He won the 1,500 at the Landmark Outdoor Championships, and added a second-place finish in the 800, helping the Crusaders to a second-place team finish. This marks his fourth selection to an All-Academic Team and the economics major is also a multiple-time Academic Honor Roll selection.

Alycia Woodruff of West Chester, Pa. capped one of the most decorated running careers in Susquehanna and Landmark history by qualifying for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. She ran the 3,000-steeplechase at the NCAA meet, an event she won at the Landmark Championship and owns the conference record. She earned a degree in history and secondary education with a solid GPA.
