MADISON, N.J. – The Landmark Conference has selected eight
student-athletes as Landmark Senior Scholar Athletes for their
respective spring sports. A committee of Landmark Conference
officers, athletics directors and sports information directors
selected the recipients, choosing one senior from each of the
spring sports sponsored by the conference. The honorees must have a
cumulative GPA of 3.2 and are selected based on their
accomplishments in all areas of college life including athletics,
academics and other extracurricular activities.
The 2008 Landmark spring sport Senior Scholar Athletes are:
Baseball: Robert Teneholz (Woodland Park, Colo./Woodland Park),
United States Merchant Marine Academy; Men’s Lacrosse: Luke
Burtnett (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Susquehanna
University; Women’s Lacrosse: Emily Blatter (Lexington,
Va./Rockbridge County), Goucher College; Softball: Danielle McCann
(Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston), Susquehanna
University; Men’s Tennis: Jason Woods (Irvington,
N.Y./Irvington), Drew University; Women’s Tennis: Rebecca
Angstadt (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg), Moravian College; Men’s
Outdoor Track & Field: Nathaniel Tussey (Perkiomenville,
Pa./Boyertown), Moravian College; Women’s Outdoor Track &
Field: Sarah Burkhardt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Schaumburg),
Susquehanna University.
Teneholz excelled on the baseball field and in the classroom over
a four-year career at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. He
was a four-year starter for the Mariners as a middle infielder and
finished his career with 113 games played and 111 starts. He piled
up 93 hits, 58 runs and 44 RBI in his four seasons, including a
pair of 30-hit seasons. He was also a co-captain for the Mariners
as a senior. Teneholz also starred off the field as he was ranked
second in the senior class while earning a degree in logistics and
intermodal transportation. He was awarded a gold star for posting a
GPA of 3.5 or better for a semester five times, and also claimed
gold star recognition in each trimester of his college career.
Burtnett was a strong all-around contributor for the Susquehanna
lacrosse program. He earned four letters for the Crusaders as a
defender and made 39 starts in 54 games played over his career. He
contributed 68 ground balls as a defender during his career,
including a career-high 24 ground balls as a senior. He also posted
one assist offensively which came in his freshman year. Burtnett
graduated magna cum laude from Susquehanna with a degree in
broadcasting. He was a member of conference academic honor rolls
multiple times over his four-year career, and also worked as a disc
jockey at the Susquehanna radio station during his four years.
Blatter closed her career as one of the most prolific performers
in the history of the Goucher women’s lacrosse program while
also starring off the field. She was a four-time All-Conference
selection, including a first-team All-Landmark Conference as a
senior, and was also a three-time All-Region performer. As a senior
she led the Landmark in goals per game, assists per game and points
per game, and she finished her career with 211 goals, 97 assists
and 308 points, which all ranked in the top-four in school history.
Blatter was a captain for the Gophers and earned numerous academic
awards including being named to the Landmark Spring All-Academic
Team as she earned a degree in English with a minor in peace
studies.
McCann was a four-year participant on the softball team at
Susquehanna while also excelling in the classroom. She made 57
starts and appeared in 75 games over four seasons, and produced
career highs in every offensive category as a senior by knocking
out 21 hits to go along with 10 runs, three doubles and 10 RBI. She
also served as a co-captain for the Crusaders and helped the team
earn one conference postseason berth during her career. McCann
graduated cum laude with a degree in accounting and finance with a
minor in Spanish. She was twice selected for conference academic
honor rolls and was a member of the Economics Honor Society, the
Accounting Club and the Investment Club at Susquehanna.
Drew’s Woods was a major part of the Rangers winning the
Landmark Conference men’s tennis championship as he concluded
his career by going 6-2 in Landmark singles matches. He was a
first-team All-Conference singles player, and a second-team
All-Landmark pick in doubles. He finished his career with a 17-4
career record in conference singles matches and he was a two-time
All-Conference selection. Off the court, Woods maintained a
superior GPA while earning a degree in neuroscience. He was a
Dean’s List selection each semester of his college career and
earned a spot on the Landmark Spring All-Academic Team and was also
recognized as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar
Athlete.
Angstadt was a key performer as Moravian claimed the first
Landmark women’s tennis championship. She was named a
second-team All-Landmark pick as she posted a singles record of
17-5 in 2008. She helped Moravian win two conference titles and
earn the program’s first NCAA tournament appearance as a
junior, and her career singles record is 39-9. Angstadt earned a
spot on the Dean’s List each semester at Moravian and was an
ESPN The Magazine first-team Academic All-American as a junior, and
is eligible for the award as a senior after earning Academic
All-District honors for the second time. She earned her degree in
mathematics and accounting and was also a member of several campus
organizations at Moravian.
Moravian’s Tussey capped a career that ranks him as one of
the top performers in the history of the Greyhound track and field
program. He was a three-time All-American, with two of those honors
coming in his senior season as he placed 5th at the NCAA
Championships in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 400-meter
hurdles. He piled up an impressive seven first-place finishes in
individual events at conference championships over the course of
his career and qualified for the NCAA Championships five times.
Tussey graduated with a degree in biology/pre-veterinary and was a
2008 Spring Landmark All-Academic honoree. He was also chosen as
the 2008 Moravian Senior Male Blue & Grey Scholar Athlete.
Burkhardt excelled on and off the track for Susquehanna, helping
the team finish as the runner-up in both the Landmark Indoor and
Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She was a second-team
All-Conference performer both indoor and outdoor as she placed
second in the high jump as a senior, and she was a conference
champion in the high jump as a freshman. She added three other
top-five finishes at Landmark Championships as a senior. Burkhardt
graduated magna cum laude with University Honors with a degree in
communications and sociology at Susquehanna. She was a member of
the senior class council and the chapel council and was also a
staff writer for the Susquehanna student newspaper.
The Landmark Conference honored Senior Scholar Athletes in each of
the 20 varsity sports sponsored by the conference over the course
of the 2007-08 academic year. In its first season the Landmark
Conference has had numerous student-athletes earn All-American,
All-Region, ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American and Academic
All-District honors.
