Selects Fall Senior Scholar Athletes

MADISON, N.J. - The Landmark Conference has chosen six athletes as Landmark Senior Scholar Athletes for their respective fall sports. A committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors and sports information directors selected the recipients, choosing one senior from each of the fall sports sponsored by the conference. The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 and are selected based on their accomplishments in all areas of college life including athletics, academics and other extracurricular activities.

The 2007 Landmark fall sport Senior Scholar Athletes are: Men's Cross Country: Josiah Ramsey (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy), Susquehanna University; Women's Cross Country: J. Fraley Coles (The Plains, Va./Highland School), Goucher College; Michelle Campbell (Annville, Pa./Northern Lebanon), Juniata College; Men's Soccer: Chris Nitta (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Prep.), United States Merchant Marine Academy; Women's Soccer: Mary Beth Vogel (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), The University of Scranton; Women's Volleyball: Brooke Hinkley (Hallstead, Pa./Blue Ridge), The University of Scranton.

Ramsey was a key contributor for the Susquehanna men's cross country team that earned the first Landmark Conference Championship this fall. He earned second-team All-Conference honors with an eighth-place finish at the conference meet and he also placed in the top-100 in the region. Ramsey was a team captain for the Crusaders as a junior and a senior and made the freshman All-Region Team in his first year of competition. He is a three-time conference Academic Honor Roll selection, and was named to the Landmark All-Academic Team this fall. He's pursuing a degree in elementary education and has made the Dean's List in five of his six semesters and is a member of the National Education Honor Society.

Coles has enjoyed a career that ranks as one of the best in the history of the Goucher cross country program. The senior is a four-time All-Conference honoree, including first-team honors this season, and also earned All-Region accolades three times. This fall Coles became the first Goucher runner to qualify for the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. She has earned conference All-Academic recognition three times during her career while pursuing a degree in psychology. She earned an All-Academic Individual Award from the United States Track & Field & Cross Country Coaches Association three times, is the president of the Goucher community service club and serves as the student representative on the Goucer Board of Trustees.

Campbell played a major role in some of the most successful seasons in the history of the Juniata field hockey program. She earned All-Region honors for the first time in her career as a senior, and was a two-time All-Conference honoree including first-team All-Conference in her senior season. She closed her career with 25 goals and 11 assists and she ranks sixth and eighth respectively in Juniata history in career goals and career points. Juniata made three NCAA Tournament appearances during her career. Campbell is an environmental communications major and is a two-time conference academic honor roll. She won first place at the 2007 Communication Association Undergraduate Writing Competition, and will be presenting research paper at 2008 National Conference on Undergraduate Research.

Nitta has received numerous awards for his athletics and academic honors over his four-year career as a defender for USMMA. He was a two-time All-Conference selection and was a first-team Landmark selection. He was also named the Landmark Defensive Player of the Year this fall. A tri-captain for the Mariners, he earned a spot on the ESPN The Magazine College Division Men's Soccer Academic All-America Team, and was a three-time member of the Academic All-District Team. Nitta ranks second in his class at USMMA while majoring in marine engineering systems, and has earned a gold star every trimester for posting a GPA of 3.5 or better. He was recently named to the National Soccer Coaches of America Division III Scholar Athlete Team.

Vogel helped the Scranton women's soccer team claim the regular season, and Landmark Conference  Postseason Championship, by anchoring the Royals defense this fall. She was a first-team All-Landmark selection in 2007, which was the third All-Conference honor of her career. She was a part of two NCAA Tournament teams, and three conference championship teams during her four-year career. Vogel is also a three-time All-Conference performer in softball for the Royals. She is pursuing a degree in nursing and is the President of the Scranton Student Athlete Advisory Council. She is also a member of the President's Student Council and has received Conference Academic Honor Roll distinction three times.

Hinkley ranks as one of the most decorated athletes in the history of the Scranton women's volleyball program. She was a first-team All-Landmark pick in 2007, and in 2006 was her conference's Player of the Year while also earning first-team All-Conference status. She ranks first in Scranton history in career block assists and is second in career total blocks and fourth in career hitting percentage. Hinkley was an ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District selection in 2006 and was Landmark All-Academic honoree this fall. She is a management major with a minor in finance and is a member of the Business Leadership Program and the Business Honor Society. She has been a member of the Scranton Dean's List in each of her collegiate semesters.

The Landmark Conference will select a Senior Scholar Athlete in each of the 19 varsity sports sponsored by the conference over the course of the 2007-08 academic year.
