MADISON, N.J. – The Landmark Conference has selected six
athletes as Landmark Senior Scholar Athletes for their respective
winter sports. A committee of Landmark Conference officers,
athletics directors and sports information directors selected the
recipients, choosing one senior from each of the winter sports
sponsored by the conference. The honorees must have a cumulative
GPA of 3.2 and are selected based on their accomplishments in all
areas of college life including athletics, academics and other
extracurricular activities. The award is the most exclusive awarded
by the Conference with just 20 honorees for each academic year.
The 2010 Landmark winter sport Senior Scholar Athletes are:
Men's Basketball: Jeff Berkey (Stoystown,
Pa./Shanksville-Stonycreek), Juniata College; Women's
Basketball: Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold
Spring Harbor), Moravian College; Men's Swimming &
Diving: Scott Heilman (Toms River, N.J./Toms River
North), United States Merchant Marine Academy; Women's
Swimming & Diving: Lauren Wieland (Blue Bell,
Pa./Wissahickon), The University of Scranton; Men's Indoor
Track & Field: Steve Drosdick (Verona,
N.J./Verona), Susquehanna University; Women's Indoor Track
& Field: Jessica Posimo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Basil
Academy), Moravian College.
Berkey was a standout for the Juniata men's basketball team and
a two-year captain for the Eagles. He was chosen as a second-team
All-Conference pick in both his junior and senior year. He averaged
nearly 10 points per game for his career and ranks fifth in program
history in three-point field goals made and his 67 made threes as a
senior is the third-highest total in school history. Berkey is
majoring in business management and politics with an interest in
economics and law. He has been selected to the Landmark Winter
All-Academic Team twice, and has earned Dean's List honors seven
semesters. He is a member of the National Leadership Honor Society
and studied abroad in Senegal and Gambia.
Harrison closed her career by helping Moravian claim its first
Landmark women's basketball championship and earn the team's
second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. She is a three-time
All-Conference choice, and earned first-team honors as a junior and
senior. She was also chosen as an All-Region and ECAC All-Star in
her final year, when she averaged nearly 11 points per game, while
grabbing 160 rebounds, passing out 85 assists and collecting 43
steals. In the classroom, Harrison will graduate with a degree in
elementary education and psychology, and has produced a strong
cumulative GPA over four years. She is a three-time Academic Honor
Roll choice and earned Winter All-Academic honors as a senior.
Heilman was a team captain and key performer for the USMMA
swimming and diving team that claimed its third-straight Landmark
Championship this year. He was a three-time All-Conference
performer for the Mariners capped by his winning performance in the
200 freestyle at the Landmark Swimming & Diving Championships
in his senior year. He has also been a part of a pair of winning
relays in three seasons and had a runner-up finish in the 200 at
the 2009 Landmark Championships. He is pursuing a degree in
maritime operations and technology, and has as strong cumulative
GPA. Heilman is a Regimental Officer and Company Commander at USMMA
and is listed in Who's Who Among College Students in America.
Wieland excelled for the Scranton women's swimming and diving
team, helping the team win three straight Landmark Championships.
She earned first-team All-Conference honors three times, and won
individual events on two occasions at the Landmark Championship,
tying for the win in the 1,650 freestyle as a senior and winning
the 200-freestyle as a sophomore. She also had six runner-up
finishes at the Landmark meet in her career, and had 46 first-place
finishes during her career in dual-meet competition. An
occupational management major, Wieland has twice earned Landmark
All-Academic honors. She is a four-time Dean's List honoree and
volunteers with Head Start and at local kindergartens and
preschools.
Drosdick has been a strong performer for the Susquehanna track
program, and enjoyed his best performance at the 2010 Landmark
Indoor Track & Field Championship. He earned 10 points, helping
the Crusader place second, as he placed third in both the 55-meter
hurdles and the high jump. In 2009 he helped Susquehanna claim the
first indoor team championship in program history when they claimed
first at the Landmark meet. Drosdick is an economics major at
Susquehanna and has earned Academic Honor Roll status five times in
his career while compiling a stellar GPA. He also competes on the
Crusaders outdoor track team, and competes as a member of the
Susquehanna men's volleyball club team.
Posimo has been one of the top performers in track & field
since Landmark competition began. She has earned first-team
All-Conference honors at all three Landmark Indoor Track &
Field Championships, and has helped Moravian win the team title at
all three. She was the Field Athlete of the Year choice at the 2009
Championship, and has won seven individual events and been a part
of three winning relays at Landmark Indoor Championships. She also
qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in her junior
year. Posimo has maintained an outstanding GPA as a biochemistry
major, and is a three-time Landmark All-Academic Team honoree. She
also is an affiliate for the American Chemistry Society.
The Landmark Conference will select a Senior Scholar Athlete in
each of the 20 varsity sports sponsored by the conference over the
course of the 2009-10 academic year.
