2015-16 Baseball Athletes of the Week

 
  • Men's Athlete of the Week - Justin Cassinelli (Susquehanna)
    May 02, 2016
    (Sr, INF - Valhalla, N.Y.) Cassinelli hit for the cycle in Sunday's 13-3 win over Elizabethtown to cap off a week in which he hit for a .625 batting average with 10 hits, nine runs scored and 10 RBI. He had two doubles, one triple and four homers for a 1.625 slugging percentage and a .650 on-base percentage. He walked twice, stole two bases and struck out just twice in 16 at-bats. He also did not commit an error and had 12 putouts. He had at least one hit in all four games and had two games with at least three hits. He also scored at least one run in every game and had a week-high six RBI in loss at Keystone.
     
  • Men's Pitcher of the Week - Jon Mierzwa (Catholic)
    May 02, 2016
    (Fr., p - Laurel, Md.) In a must win situation Mierzwa took the mound for Catholic for the greatest performance of his rookie season. The freshman pitched a full seven innings for the Cardinals in game two of their final Landmark Conference series, versus Juniata. Mierzwa shutout the Eagles, throwing a career and threw a season high 13 strikeouts. He dealt a nearly perfect game, giving up just one hit in the top of the sixth to help keep Catholic's playoff hopes alive.
     
  • Men's Athlete of the Week - Charles Savite (Moravian)
    April 25, 2016
    (Sr, 1B - Hackettstown, N.J.) Savite helped Moravian to a 3-1 record last week including a 3-0 series sweep of Juniata College as the Greyhounds clinched their eighth straight postseason appearance. Savite hit .533 for the week (8-for-15) with six runs, three doubles, three homers and eight RBIs for a 1.333 slugging percentage. Savite added three walks and a hit by pitch for a .632 on-base percentage, and he also had one stolen base.
     
  • Men's Pitcher of the Week - Ryan Kahn (Moravian)
    April 25, 2016
    (So, P - Bayonne, N.J.) Kahn posted a shutout in his only outing of the week, as he defeated Juniata College, 11-0. Kahn scattered three hits and did not allow a walk while striking out seven batters in the seven-inning win. The only attempted stolen base in the game was thrown out during the game.
     
  • Men's Athlete of the Week - Zach Leone (Susquehanna)
    April 18, 2016
    (So, C - Pelham, NY) Leone started all five games this week and hit for a .526 average. He had 10 hits (six for extra bases - three doubles, two home runs) with a 1.158 slugging percentage and a .571 on-base percentage. He struck out just one in 19 ABs. He also scored eight runs and drove in seven.
     
  • Men's Pitcher of the Week - John Cooley (Susquehanna)
    April 18, 2016
    (Jr, P - South Salem, NY) Cooley started one game and tossed one inning of relief this past week. He pitched a complete game shutout in a 3-0 win over Catholic on Tuesday, giving up just four hits and two walks while striking out eight. He came on in relief in a 19-4 win at Moravian and pitched one scoreless inning with just one hit allowed and one strikeout. He walked only two batters over the two games.
     
  • Men's Athlete of the Week - Zach Leone (Susquehanna)
    April 11, 2016
    (So, C - Pelham, N.Y.) Leone had five hits in a two-game sweep of Catholic (third game was postponed). He had at least two hits in each game and his three hits in the second game accounted for half of SU's hits as a team in that game. He drove in five runs and had three doubles with no strikeouts. He finished with a .625 on-base percentage and a 1.143 slugging percentage.
     
  • Men's Pitcher of the Week - Andrew Spinnenweber (USMMA)
    April 11, 2016
    (Fr, P - Pasadena, Md.) Spinnenweber earned his first career complete game victory in the second game of the Mariners' doubleheader sweep over Scranton on Sunday. After allowing two runs in the bottom of the first, the rookie shut down the Royal bats the rest of the game, giving up just the two runs on three hits, while striking out six Scranton batters.
     
  • Men's Athlete of the Week - Bryan Palsi (Susquehanna)
    April 04, 2016
    (Sr, INF - Brielle, NJ) Palsi had at least two hits in all five games this week. He finished with 14 hits, four runs scored and 12 RBI. He hit for a .636 batting average and had a .636 on-base percentage and a .909 slugging percentage. He finished with four doubles and one triple and struck out just once in 22 at bats.
     
  • Men's Pitcher of the Week - Brian Markowski (Scranton)
    April 04, 2016
    (So, P - Mountain Top, Pa.) Markowski's complete-game six-hitter led the Royals to a 7-1 win over Moravian in the rubber game of their three-game series, which was played on Thursday. He struck out 11 while hitting two batters and walking none in his first career complete game; his previous high for innings pitched in a game was five. After allowing a solo home run in the second inning, he got a key double play to end the third inning. From there on, he allowed just two base runners while retiring 19 of the final 21 batters he faced.
     
  • Men's Athlete of the Week - Colby Smith (Elizabethtown)
    March 28, 2016
    (Jr, 3B/1B/C - Middlesex, N.J.) Colby Smith continued to pile up the RBIs last week as Elizabethtown went 3-2, including a Landmark series victory over Catholic. Smith bashed home runs in back-to-back games, hit .500 (8-of-16) for the week, drove in eight runs and scored seven times. The junior has settled in at the hot corner, leading both the team and conference with 26 RBIs on the season, seven more than the next closest player.
     
  • Men's Pitcher of the Week - Tommy Broyles (Drew)
    March 28, 2016
    (Jr, RHP/1B - Eatontown, N.J.) Junior Tommy Broyles picked up two saves during the weekend sweep of The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, closing the door on a pair of close victories in dominating fashion. He didn't allow a hit or a walk in either appearance, and pitched a total of three innings of scoreless baseball to run his season saves total to three. He got the final four outs in the 5-2 win on Friday before retiring the final five Mariners in order to preserve the 4-2 victory in the series finale on Saturday. The dynamic Broyles also fielded his position perfectly in three total chances and added seven hits at the plate last week for a .333 average, including the game-winning RBI in the top of the seventh during Game 1 on Saturday. He hit .385 with three runs and two RBIs throughout the Landmark Conference series sweep.
     
  • Men's Athlete of the Week - Alex Bull (Moravian)
    March 21, 2016
    (Sr, 3B - Fair Haven, N.J.) Bull helped the Greyhounds to a 5-0 week including a sweep of Catholic in Landmark Conference action last week. He hit .533 with eight hits in 15 at-bats, and Bull hit safely in all five games during the week with two multi-hit games. He added two doubles, two home runs, five runs scored and six RBIs to go with three walks for a .579 on-base percentage and a 1.067 slugging percentage.
     
  • Men's Pitcher of the Week - Cory Fallon (Susquehanna)
    March 21, 2016
    (Jr, INF - Garden City, N.Y.) Fallon started game two vs Drew and threw a one-hit, seven-inning, complete game shutout. He walked just one batter while striking out three for the win. This season, Fallon is 3-0 in four starts with a 2.31 ERA, 24.0 innings pitched and one complete game.
     
  • Men's Athlete of the Week - Ryan Sabbag (Drew)
    March 14, 2016
    (So, OF - Miami, Fla.) Sophomore right fielder Ryan Sabbag hit .444 (8-for-18) with eight RBIs and six runs during six games at the Florida Gulf Coast Spring Training. The five-tool player's slash line stood at .444/.560/.667 for the week, while he hit four doubles and stole four bases. The Rangers, who went 4-4 in Florida, picked up victories in two of Sabbag's biggest games. He was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs in a 14-4 win over Hilbert, and 4-for-4 with four RBI, three runs and two stolen bases in a come-from-behind 15-10 win against Delaware Valley University.
     
  • Men's Pitcher of the Week - Sean McNamara (Scranton)
    March 14, 2016
    (Jr, P - Scarsdale, N.Y.) McNamara tossed a complete-game five-hitter to lead the Royals to a 4-1 win over Swarthmore on Friday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Royals had dropped the opener of a doubleheader against Swarthmore, 6-0, and McNamara gave them the boost they needed to earn the split. He allowed just one run in the seventh inning while allowing those five hits, four of them singles, and not walking anyone. He struck out three while picking up his second victory of the season and dropping Swarthmore to 9-3 on the year.
     
  • Men's Athlete of the Week - Bailey Lewis (Catholic)
    March 07, 2016
    (Fr., OF - Matthews, N.C.) Bailey Lewis stepped to the plate 12 times in CUA's last four games to drive in nine RBI. Lewis helped life the Cards past No. 18 Mary Washington in a 14- 6 victory on their spring break trip in Myrtle Beach. In the first inning, with Eagles preseason All-American pitcher Ryan Van Assche on the mound, Lewis drilled a two-RBI triple to center field. With a sacrifice fly in the fourth Lewis drove in one more run Cards. Lewis continued his hitting streak, with three hits and three RBI in both CUA's 13-6 victory over York (Pa.) and their rematch against No. 18 Mary Washington.
     
  • Men's Pitcher of the Week - Kevin Elwell (Elizabethtown)
    March 07, 2016
    (Jr, RHP - Clarks Summit, Pa.) Junior right-hander Kevin Elwell was fantastic in two starts for Elizabethtown over the first week of the season. Elwell got the ball in the Blue Jays' opener and proceeded to toss a two-hit, complete game shutout in a 9-0 victory over Massachusetts Maritime Sunday. He struck out four and did not allow a free pass over seven innings. On Friday, he blanked Eastern over seven frames in a 12-2 E-town win. He yielded just three hits, walked none and fanned four.
     
  • Men's Athlete of the Week - Zach Leone (Susquehanna)
    February 29, 2016
    (So, C - Pelham, N.Y.) Leone hit for a .692 average in three games this past week. He had nine hits, including two home runs and two doubles, six runs scored and nine RBI. He had a .667 on-base percentage, a 1.308 slugging percentage, added a stolen base and did not strikeout. He did not commit an error behind the plate. SU opened the season 1-2 with games against Christopher Newport and Ithaca.
     
  • Landmark Pitcher of the Week - Nicolas Ampietro (Moravian)
    February 29, 2016
    (Jr, P/2B - Allentown, Pa.) Ampietro earned the victory in Moravian's 5-2 win over host Hampden-Sydney College to round out the Greyhounds' trip to the Hampden-Sydney Classic Sunday. Ampietro tossed six innings and allowed just six hits and two runs, only one earned, while striking out three batters. In the first two games of the weekend, Ampietro started at second base for the Hounds and was 2-for-5 with a double and a stolen base, and he had two putouts and nine assists in 11 chances in the field.
