2016-17 Baseball Athletes of the Week Men's Athlete of the Week - Kevin Haag, Scranton May 08, 2017 (Fr., 1B - Ossining, N.Y.) Haag had a big week while leading the Royals to wins in all four games. He finished the week 6-for-14 with four extra-base hits, seven RBIs and six runs scored. He started the week with a solo home run in a 6-4 win at Marywood on Monday. A day later, he singled, drove in a run and scored a run in a 9-5 win at Wilkes. Then on Saturday, he went a combined 4-for-6 with three extra-base hits, five RBIs and two runs in a doubleheader sweep against Juniata. He had a two-run double in a 6-5 win in the first game, then had two solo home runs and then drove in the winning run when he was hit by a pitch in a 7-6 win in the second game. He finished that game 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs. Men's Pitcher of the Week - Anthony Lippy, Elizabethtown May 08, 2017 (Jr, RHP - Hanover, Pa.) Elizabethtown junior right-hander Anthony Lippy stifled Drew in game two of Sunday's doubleheader sweep that carried the Blue Jays into the Landmark Championship tournament. Lippy tossed a four-hit, complete game, shutout in a 2-0 victory --the first shutout of his career. The Hanover, Pennsylvania, native faced the minimum number of batters in five of the seven innings and did not issue a walk while striking out five. Lippy improved to 2-0 with two complete games, an 0.53 ERA, 12 hits allowed and 15 strikeouts in 17 innings over three career appearances against the Rangers since 2015. Men's Athlete of the Week - Brennan Cotter, Catholic May 01, 2017 (Jr., 1B - , 25) Catholic junior Brennan Cotter batted .533 this week including four home runs and 11 RBIs for the Cardinals. During Catholic's doubleheader sweep over St. Mary's, Cotter totaled five hits and seven RBIs including three home runs during the doubleheader. The first baseman hit a lead-off homer in the second inning of game one. In game two he went 3-of-3 while crusheding a three-RBI homer in the opening inning of game two followed by a two-run home run in the fifth. Men's Pitcher of the Week - Tommy Broyles, Drew May 01, 2017 (Sr, RHP/1B - Eatontown, N.J.) Senior pitcher Tommy Broyles appeared at the end of all three games of the Susquehanna series, earning saves in both ends of the Saturday doubleheader sweep. He threw a total of 6.1 innings without allowing an earned run, lowering his Landmark-leading ERA to 0.86. He allowed four hits and a walk over that span and struck out five River Hawks. He got the final seven outs of the Game 1 victory to help seal the 4-2 final score before getting another save in Game 2 with the final six outs in the 3-1 win. Men's Athlete of the Week - Paul Burmester, Catholic April 24, 2017 (Sr., C - , 33) Catholic University senior Paul Burmester led the Cardinals to a 2-1 week, batting .571 this week against the Juniata Eagles. He went 3-of-4 in game three with three runs and five RBI including a grand slam in the fifth inning. Men's Pitcher of the Week - Ryan Fitzpatrick, Drew April 24, 2017 (Sr, RHP - Cedar Grove, N.J.) Senior starter Ryan Fitzpatrick is the third Ranger in a month to earn Landmark Pitcher of the Week. He fired a four-hit complete game shutout at PNC Field against Scranton, and they needed every bit of that gem in the 1-0 victory. In his seven innings of work, he didn't walk anyone and struck out three, while fielding his position perfectly with no errors in four total chances. Men's Athlete of the Week - Kyle Fackler April 17, 2017 (Sr, 2B - Harrisburg, Pa.) Fackler hit safely in three at-bats, walking once, scoring a pair of runs and stealing a bag in a 10-1 non-conference win over Albright on Monday. Fackler went 2 for 3 with an RBI, two runs scored and three walks as E-town held off Dickinson, 8-6 on Tuesday, and then went 6 for 10 out of the lead-off spot as the Blue Jays took 2 of 3 from Catholic last weekend. Fackler's two doubles in a 3 for 4 effort on Saturday against the Cardinals pushed him into a tie for second all-time at Elizabethtown with 44. Fackler had a 1:3 strikeout to walk ratio last week, drawing six bases on balls. Men's Pitcher of the Week - Bobby Grigas, Susquehanna April 17, 2017 (Fr., P/OF - Frackville, Pa.) Freshman pitcher Bobby Grigas continued his strong rookie season with a complete-game win against Juniata on April 14. Grigas went the distance for the River Hawks, allowing four hits, two runs and totaled 15 strikeouts, a new school record. Men's Pitcher of the Week - Tommy Broyles, Drew April 10, 2017 (Sr., RHP/1B - Eatontown, N.J.) Senior Tommy Broyles earned a complete-game Landmark Conference win, a save and posted a 1.00 ERA in nine innings of work on the mound for Drew last week, all while hitting .538 with seven RBIs at the plate. Broyles pitched the scoreless final two innings in a 6-5 win against St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) on Wednesday, striking out three and earning his second save of the season. He then pitched all seven innings in the 15-1 win at Juniata, giving up three hits, no walks and striking out six. He allowed his first run of the season against Juniata to bring his season ERA to 0.42 in 21.1 innings of work. Men's Athlete of the Week - Paul Burmester, Catholic April 10, 2017 (Sr., C, Columbia, Md.) Senior Paul Burmester of The Catholic University of America baseball team batted .600 on the week and lift the Cardinals to a Landmark Conference sweep over the University of Scranton this weekend. Burmester registered at least one hit and RBI in all four of Catholics' games this week and scored at least one run in all three games versus Scranton. In the series opener, Burmester started the first inning with a three-run homer over the left field wall. Burmester hit his second homer of the day in the fourth inning of the same game. Later in game two, Burmester went 2-of-3 including an RBI double in the first. Durning Sunday's nine-inning game the senior registered another hit, run and RBI for the weekend. Men's Pitcher of the Week - Patrick Boyle, Drew April 03, 2017 (Sr, LHP - South Plainfield, N.J.) Senior starting pitcher Patrick Boyle allowed just two hits and no runs over 7.2 innings of work in Drew's 2-0 shutout of Swarthmore in their only action of the week. The senior hurler struck out four and allowed three walks in a dazzling start, taking a no-decision after exiting in the eighth with the game scoreless. Boyle retired 12 batters in a row with the game tied at 0-0 into the eighth inning. Men's Athlete of the Week - Mike Christy, Elizabethtown April 03, 2017 (So, UT - Harleysville, Pa.) Elizabethtown sophomore Mike Christy had a huge afternoon Sunday against Scranton, combining for seven hits, seven RBIs and two home runs in a sweep. In game one, Christy went 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs as the Blue Jays outlasted the Royals, 14-10. The Harleysville, Pennsylvania, native then carried E-town to a 9-8 extra-inning win in game two, launching a pair of home runs and driving in five. Christy hit the go-ahead, eventual game-winning home run --a solo shot-- in the top of the eighth and also blasted a 3-run homer to get the Jays on the board in the third. Men's Pitcher of the Week - Bobby Grigas, Susquehanna March 27, 2017 (Fr., P/OF - Frackville, Pa.) Susquehanna freshman Bobby Grigas earns his second Athlete of the Week after throwing his third shutout of the season with a 13-0 win in a complete-game effort against Scranton. He allowed four hits over seven innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Men's Pitcher of the Week - Joseph Salzano, Catholic March 20, 2017 (Sr., P - , 21) Closer Joseph Salzano took the Catholic mound in the top of the eighth and pitched all three extra innings of game one. He tossed three strikeouts in three innings and earned his second win of the 2017 season. The senior gave up just one hit and with three total chances he recorded three assists. Salzano gave the Catholic offense the opportunity to capture the extra-innings victory as Moravian left five total runners on base during Salzano's showing. Men's Athlete of the Week - Anthony Simone, Scranton March 20, 2017 (Sr., OF/2B - Wayne, N.J.) Simone had a big week to help the Royals go 3-2 in the final five games of their spring break trip to Fort Myers, Fla. He hit .533 with a .611 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage. He finished with eight hits in 15 at bats, including four doubles and a home run. Men's Pitcher of the Week - Jon Mierzwa, Catholic March 13, 2017 (So., P - Laurel, Md.) Starting pitcher, Jon Mierzwa of The Catholic University of America baseball team threw 15 strikeouts in seven innings to capture a 5-1 win over Rutgers-Newark. The victory was Mierzwa's second straight Sunday afternoon triumph. He faced 26 batters, allowed just three hits and one run. The win lift the Cardinals to a 10-2 overall record and they finished their spring break trip 7-1. Men's Athlete of the Week - Jake Crist, Catholic March 13, 2017 (Jr., 1B/OF - Greencastle, Pa.) Jake Crist of The Catholic University of America baseball team stood behind the plate as the designated hitter in all six of the Cardinals spring break games this week. He helped the Cards to a 5-1 week. Crist registered 13 hits, crushed four doubles and drove in eight RBIs over the course of the week. Men's Pitcher of the Week - Kevin Elwell, Elizabethtown March 06, 2017 (Sr, RHP - Clarks Summit, Pa.) Kevin Elwell continued to his strong start to 2017 on Sunday when he fired an eight-inning six-hit shutout against La Roche in Fort Pierce, Fla. Elwell. The senior allowed just six hits --all singles-- and struck out five in picking up his 20th career win and sixth career shutout. Men's Athlete of the Week - Brett Padula, Catholic March 06, 2017 (Sr., OF) Brett Padula went 7-or10 from the plate for the Cardinals this week. He registered three hits and had RBI in the Cards regional 9-1 victory over Washington College. Additionally he scored the game-winning run in the against the Shoremen in the top of the seventh inning. During the opening games for Catholic's annual spring break trip, Padula cracked four hits against Penn-St. Berks, lifting the Cards to two victories (3-1, 4-3). The senior hit .700 over three games with a slugging percentage of .800. Men's Pitcher of the Week - Bobby Grigas, Susquehanna February 27, 2017 (Fr., P/OF - Frackville, Pa.) In his first career start, freshman Bobby Grigas earned his first win Sunday afternoon against Christopher Newport. Grigas threw seven innings scoreless allowing just four hits and striking out 12 batters as he led the River Hawks to their first victory of the season with a 4-0 final score. Men's Athlete of the Week - Brennan Cotter, Catholic February 27, 2017 (Jr., 3B/1B - Oakland, N.J.) Brennan Cotter opened the 2017 Catholic baseball season with eight hits over three games. Cotter drove in three RBIs in Catholic's season opening, 14-1, victory over St. Mary's on Wednesday. On Saturday, Cotter came up big for the Cardinals' offense during their doubleheader versus Hood College. He recorded seven total hits including three doubles, a homerun and four RBIs. In extra innings of game-one, Cotter popped a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home the winning run. In game-two he sent a 2-run rocket over the fence to put Catholic up 5-2. LAter, Cotter hit an RBI double in the seventh to tie the game.
