2015-16 Basketball Athletes of the Week Men's Athlete of the Week - Louis Khouri (Catholic) February 22, 2016 (Jr., G - Alexandria, Va.) Winner of eight in a row, CUA won three games last week to clinch the 2016 Landmark Regular Season Title thanks large in part to Khouri joining the starting lineup for head coach Steve Howes. The third-year sharpshooter started each game after only beginning one this previously this season. The move paid huge dividends as he averaged 20 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.7 3-pointers per game. He scored a season-best 24 points in the win over Juniata with a career-high seven triples and followed up the performance with a second-straight 20-point outing and a personal-best 11 rebounds in a huge win against Scranton. Khouri shot an incredible 68 percent (17-of-25) from long range last week and 63.3 percent (19-of-30) from the field, and he also averaged 2.3 steals and 1.7 assists as CUA claimed its second-straight regular season title and third in four years. Men's Athlete of the Week - Brendan Boken (Scranton) February 15, 2016 (Sr, F - South Pasadena, Calif.) Boken had another huge week in a season full of them. He averaged 27.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks as Scranton won twice to extend its winning streak to seven. He began the week with 25 points on 7-for-14 shooting, including 2-for-3 from 3-point range, in a 67-58 win over 17th-ranked Susquehanna on the road. He also had eight rebounds, and steal and a block in the win. Three days later, he poured in 30 points in 12-for-17 from the field to go along with five rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block in a 77-57 win over Goucher on Senior Day in the Long Center. It was his fifth game this season of 30 or more points. The 55-point week gives Boken 1,810 career points, third-most in school history. Men's Athlete of the Week - Jay Howard (Catholic) February 08, 2016 (So, F - Pennsauken, N.J.) CUA's sophomore forward was rolling in two road, conference wins last week, averaging 24 points, including a career-high 28 in a hard-fought win at Drew. Howard put up at least 20 points in both victories, going 7-of-9 from the field for 20 at Elizabethtown, before knocking down 11 shots and six free throws against the Rangers. The Preseason All-America honorable mention selection also chipped in 6.5 rebounds per game, going for six and seven. He was everywhere for Catholic at Drew with three assists and two steals. The Landmark's second-leading scorer is now averaging 20.2 points this season to go along with his 62.0 field goal percentage, good for third in the league. Entering the weekend, Howard was 31st in the nation with 141 free throws made, 34th with 149 field goals made and 51st with 397 total points. Athlete of the Week - David Smith (USMMA) February 01, 2016 (Sr, G - Lakewood, Wash.) Smith was the leading scorer in two big victories for Merchant Marine this past week. He led all players with 17 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Trinity (Conn.), which was receiving votes in the D3Hoops.com Top 25, picking up his team-leading third double-double of the year, to go along with three steals and one block. In an important Landmark victory on Saturday over Goucher, the senior drained a game-high 22 points with five rebounds, two steals, a block and a steal. He was a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range in the second half, helping the Mariners distance themselves down the stretch from a hot Gophers team. Over the two games, he shot 56.0-percent from the field (14-for-25), including 58.8-percent from three-point range (10-for-17). Smith now sits just 34 points away from 1,000 for his career. Athlete of the Week - Josh Miller (Susquehanna) January 25, 2016 (Sr, F - Strasburg, Pa.) Miller had a double-double in SU's lone game of the week with 20 points and 15 rebounds in just 26 minutes of work in a win over Goucher. He shot 50 percent from the floor, 40 percent (2-5) from beyond the arc and was 8-8 at the free throw line. He had 15 rebounds, one assist and one block. This season, Miller has started all 17 games and leads the team with 16.6 ppg and 8.0 rpg. He is shooting 53 percent from the floor, 37 percent from three-point range and a team-high 85.3 percent at the free throw line. He also has 32 assists, 11 blocks and 13 steals. He is averaging nearly 31 minutes per game. The No. 15 Crusaders are 16-1 overall with a 7-1 mark in Landmark games; they remain 8-0 at home. Athlete of the Week - Mike Klinger (Drew) January 18, 2016 (Sr, G - Franklin Park, N.J.) Senior guard Mike Klinger played every minute during a monumental 2-0 week in Landmark Conference play for the Rangers, including a 76-74 victory over previously undefeated and No. 11 ranked Susquehanna University. Klinger averaged 27 points, four rebounds and four assists per game while turning the ball over just once in 80 minutes of court time. He shot 9-of-15 in Drew's defeat of the nationally ranked Crusaders on Saturday, and tied a career-high with 33 points on Wednesday in a win over Elizabethtown College. The win over the Blue Jays included six of his eight 3-pointers made last week. Athlete of the Week - Brendan Boken (Scranton) January 11, 2016 (Sr, F - South Pasadena, Calif.) Boken had yet another big week, averaging 22.7 points, 13.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.7 blocks while shooting 52.2 percent. He had 20 points, including a 75-foot buzzer-beater before halftime, as the Royals rallied from a big first-half deficit to beat Drew, 69-62, on Tuesday. He added 15 rebounds and four blocks in the win. Two days later, he had 17 points, 10 rebounds and three assists in a 78-63 loss to 11th-ranked Susquehanna. He came back on Saturday to score 31 points, pull down 15 rebounds and make two free throws with 3.3 seconds left to lift the Royals to a 78-77 victory at Goucher. He went 10-for-17 for the game and had 20 second-half points. And he scored six points and assisted on the other two as the Royals finished the game on an 8-0 run to stun the Gophers on their home floor. It was his third game of 30 or more points, his fourth straight double-double and his eighth of the season. Athlete of the Week - Mike Klinger (Drew) January 04, 2016 (Sr, G - Franklin Park, N.J.) Senior guard Mike Klinger's 21.5 points per game last week led Drew to a 2-0 record, including a 78-71 victory at Juniata College to improve to 3-0 in the Landmark Conference. The Rangers' co-captain scored 19 against the Eagles on 7-of-15 shooting, with three 3-pointers, five assists and four rebounds. Earlier in the week, Klinger led all scorers with 24 points in a tight 89-88 win at Mt. Aloysius College, adding five 3-pointers, five boards and five assists. For the week, Klinger averaged 39 minutes per game and shot 45% from the field, with a 47% mark from beyond the arc. Athlete of the Week - Brandon McGuire (Moravian) December 14, 2015 (Jr, F - Philadelphia, Pa.) McGuire helped Moravian to a 2-0 record as he averaged 23.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. McGuire connected on 17-of-28 field goal attempts, 6-of-13 three-pointers and 7-of-10 free throws during the week while playing just 50 of 80 minutes in two games. McGuire had a team-high 28 points to go with eight rebounds in an 88-58 win over Haverford College, and he added 19 points and seven boards in an 88-64 victory over Penn State Lehigh Valley as Moravian equaled its win total from the 2014-15 season in just nine games. Athlete of the Week - Steven Weidlich (Susquehanna) December 07, 2015 (Jr, G - Watchung, N.J.) Weidlich started both games and logged 36 minutes per game as SU went 2-0 in conference play to remain undefeated on the season. He averaged 19.5 ppg including 26 against USMMA. He shot 44 percent from the floor, 37.5 percent from three-point range and 78.6 percent at the free throw line. He also averaged 4.0 rpg, 2.0 apg and 1.0 steals per game. This season, Weidlich has started all seven games and is averaging 16.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 30.4 minutes per game. He is shooting 39.5 percent from the floor, 31.3 percent from three-point range and 79.5 percent from the free throw line. He has 14 assists to 11 turnovers and has seven steals, second on the team. The Crusaders are 7-0 with a 2-0 mark in conference games. Athlete of the Week - Kevin Doolan (Scranton) November 30, 2015 (So, G - Basking Ridge, N.J.) Doolan was named MVP of the Cross-County Challenge as the Royals won the title and remained undefeated in the five-year history of the event. He had 24 points, including 19 in the second half, as the Royals defeated King's, 72-60, on Saturday. In 36 minutes, he had three steals, two assists and a rebound while sparking a stagnant offense in the second half. A day later, he had 19 points while making five of seven 3-point attempts in a 60-50 win over Wilkes. He finished the game with six rebounds, four assists and two steals as the Royals improved to 10-0 all-time in the event that features Scranton, King's, Wilkes and Marywood. Athlete of the Week - Brendan Boken (Scranton) November 23, 2015 (Sr, F - South Pasadena, Calif.) Boken had a monster week, averaging 32.5 points and 8.5 rebounds as the Royals split a pair of games. He began the week by scoring 35 points (two shy of matching his career high) to go along with 10 rebounds, two assists and a steal in a 78-67 win over Ithaca on Tuesday. Four days later, he had 30 points, seven rebounds, an assist and a steal in a 79-73 loss to Hobart. In the two games, Boken shot 21-for-36 (58.3 percent) from the field and 22-for-25 (88 percent) from the free throw line. He now has 1,410 career points, 17th all-time in Royals' history. Athlete of the Week - Jay Howard (Catholic) November 16, 2015 (So, F - Pennsauken, N.J.) Howard was dominant in CUA's season-opening win over 2015 NCAA Tournament qualifier Neumann, 75-64. The second-year standout shot 11-of-17 from the field (.647 FG%) for a career-high 27 points, and the only thing that was able to slow Howard was foul trouble as he was limited with two fouls in the first half, playing 24 total minutes in the game, but erupted in the second, scoring eight of his 11 baskets in the final 20 minutes. Howard also stepped up at the line, knocking down 5-of-6 shots after shooting just 53 percent last season. He also added seven rebounds, three off the offensive glass, while chipping in an assist, block and a steal.
