2016-17 Men's Tennis Athletes of the Week Men's Athlete of the Week - Jan Lasota, Catholic May 01, 2017 (Jr., - Silver Spring, Md.) The Catholic University of America men's tennis team ended its season on a high note as they downed Landmark Conference foe Moravian on its home court, 7-2. Junior Jan Lasota was a two-time winner for the Cardinals as he went over at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1. He went on to team with classmate Rob Alexander to win No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Men's Athlete of the Week - Salikh Gilmutdinov, Drew April 24, 2017 (Jr., - Tatarstan, Russia) Junior Salikh Gilmutdinov wins his fifth Landmark Athlete of the Week honor this season by going 4-0 in Landmark Conference play this week for the Rangers, who with 1-1 record, clinched a berth in the 2017 Landmark Conference Championship. He outscored opponents at the top singles spot 24-5 and teamed up at second doubles for a combined score of 16-3. He has now won 15 straight singles matches and sits atop the Landmark with an 18-1 record. Men's Athlete of the Week - Alex Machalick, Elizabethtown April 17, 2017 (Sr., - Mountain Top, Pa.) Elizabethtown senior Alex Machalick won a pair of matches as the Blue Jays defeated Moravian, 7-2, last Tuesday. Machalick and freshman teammate Connor Martin played their best match of the season together, topping Giovanni Lombardi and David Wilson, 8-2, at first singles. Machalick went on to win all 12 games against Lombardi at first singles in a 6-0, 6-0 straight set victory. Men's Athlete of the Week - Vineet Vemulapally, Drew April 10, 2017 (So., - Boca Raton, Fla.) Sophomore Vineet Vemulapally was 5-1 overall and 4-0 in Landmark Conference play during a 2-1 week for the Rangers. He won at second singles on back-to-back days at Catholic and Goucher, winning in three sets at Goucher after dropping the first set 6-0. He also combined with freshman Geoffrey Diehl for three straight wins at second doubles, pushing their winning streak as a doubles duo to 11 straight. Vemulapally's only loss came in a thrilling 11-9 third set superbreaker against Ramapo. Men's Athlete of the Week - Jack Hodges, Goucher April 03, 2017 (Jr., - London, England) Goucher junior Jack Hodges surpassed most team doubles wins at Goucher with teammate Midori Fujitani. Hodges only dropped four sets against Susquehanna's No. 1. He defeated Ben Ornstein 6-1, 6-1 and defeated Ornstein and Ryan Seibert 8-2. Men's Athlete of the Week - Vineet Vemulapally, Drew March 27, 2017 Sophomore Vineet Vemulapally was 4-0 at the No. 2 singles and doubles positions during a 2-0 week for the Rangers, including an 8-1 win at Elizabethtown to open Landmark Conference play 1-0. Vemulapally outscored his singles opponents 24-3 on the week, while combining with freshman Geoffrey Diehl to outshine foes 16-2 on the doubles court. The Drew sophomore has overall marks of 13-2 in singles and 13-1 in doubles this season. Men's Athlete of the Week - Salikh Gilmutdinov, Drew March 20, 2017 (Jr., - Tatarstan, Russia) Junior Salikh Gilmutdinov had a 4-0 week through singles and doubles play during a 2-0 period for the Rangers. Gilmutdinov outscored the oppositions' top singles players 24-1 in the pair of Drew victories, while teaming with sophomore Will Morrison for two wins at first doubles, 8-3 against Rutgers-Newark and 8-2 over John Jay. Gilmutdinov is now 10-1 this season in singles matches, 8-0 at No. 1 in dual matches. Men's Athlete of the Week - Salikh Gilmutdinov, Drew March 13, 2017 (Jr., - Tatarstan, Russia) Junior Salikh Gilmutdinov was a combined 8-0 throughout singles and doubles play without dropping a single set during a 3-1 week for Drew on spring break in Hilton Head, S.C. He outscored opponents 48-11 at the top singles spot, and teamed with sophomore Will Morrison at No. 1 doubles to overpower foes 33-20, including a 7-2 superbreaker in the 9-8 win over Penn State Behrend. Gilmutdinov was perfect 6-0, 6-0 against Thomas More and started the week with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Ohio Northern. Men's Athlete of the Week - Peter Demyan, Moravian March 06, 2017 (Sophomore, - Bethlehem, Pa.) The Greyhounds began their 2017 spring season Sunday evening on Orlando, Florida with a match versus Aquinas (Mich.) College of the NAIA. Demyan was able to force a third set in his match at second singles with a 7-5 win in the second set. Men's Athlete of the Week - Salikh Gilmutdinov, Drew February 27, 2017 (Jr., - Tatarstan, Russia) Junior Salikh Gilmutdinov led the Rangers to a sweep of FDU-Florham on Saturday in which Drew did not drop a single set to the cross-street rivals. He lost just three games in a straight-set win over the Devils' top singles players, then teamed up with sophomore Will Morrison for an 8-4 victory at the top doubles spot. The 9-0 win helped Drew improve to 4-0 to start a season for the first time since 2000. Men's Athlete of the Week - Giovanni Lombardi (Moravian) October 10, 2016 (Senior, - Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) Lombardi helped the Greyhounds pick up their first win of the season as Moravian closed out its fall season with a 9-0 win at DeSales University. Lombardi teamed up with junior David Wilson for a win at first doubles, and he a straight sets win at first singles to finish the fall at 2-1 in dual matches in his first action at first singles. Men's Athlete of the Week - Alexander Dove (Susquehanna) October 03, 2016 (So., - Collegeville, Pa.) Susquehanna sophomore Alexander Dove went 2-0 last weekend against Alvernia. Dove, playing at No. 2 singles posted a 7-5, 6-3 win against Colin MacCloskey and teamed with Nicholas Meale at No. 2 doubles for an 8-3 victory. Men's Athlete of the Week - Keller McGurrin (Scranton) September 26, 2016 (Jr., - Clarks Summit, Pa.) Won at both singles and doubles in Scranton's dominating win at Marywood on Friday to increase their record on the fall season to 2-0. The junior didn't lose a point in either double or singles match. Men's Athlete of the Week - Juan Lorido (Catholic) September 19, 2016 (Sr., - Miami, Fla.) Juan Lorido, was strong in two top matches for Catholic, winning at the top spot on the road at St. Mary's. Lorida went over SMC's Jonathan Gorel, 6-3, 6-2, and then teamed with fellow All-Landmark performer Jan Lasota, to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-6, in a tightly contested match. Men's Athlete of the Week - Alexander Ochalski (Scranton) September 12, 2016 (So., - Hopewell, N.J.) Ochalski got the season started on the right foot by being the lone Royal to win twice in a 6-3 season-opening victory at Messiah. He teamed with Keller McGurrin to snag an 8-3 win at no. 1 doubles, then went out and rolled to a 6-4, 6-2 win at no. 2 singles. Both wins were the seventh of his career in both singles and doubles.
